Will pid work as pyrometer?

I have an extra pid and was wondering if you hook power to it and a thermocouple will it read Temp.
Also why can you buy a pid cheaper than a pyrometer? Doesn't seem quite right.

Good question. I want to know the answer too. I was thinking about buying PID and thermocouple and use them in my coffe-can style forge to have more control over the temperature. The DC current output from PID intended for relay in theory could be used to light up the "alarm" bulb.

Very simple do do and if you get a SSR with the PID you can add a solenoid valve in the future. Stacy did a thread about making the PID, SSR and thermocouple a unit that you could move from one piece of equipment to another. Great idea. To use as a pyrometer you would simply need to get a small electrical junction box to mount the PID in. Cut the right sized hole for the PID to mount. Run in a 110 cord and connect to terminals and connect the 2 thermocouple leads and away you go. You can get everything including a SSR from http://auberins.com/ for less than $100

Best cheap pyrometer you can get! I've been using PIDs for the past three years..... I have one on my welding forge as a pyrometer, as a controller on my salt tank, as a controller on my quench tank, and am gathering the parts (PID and Contactor) to convert an old electric heat treat oven from analog to digital.

The PIDs are some of the handiest devices to come down the pike over the past few years. With a bit of imagination, you can use them to control just about any hot or cold application, where temp control is involved.

Thanks Stacy, Ed and ib2v4u. That's great. I'll try it on my forge. I got my pid off ebay for $35.00. The only plain Pyrometer I've found was more than double that.
