:DTomorrow I will start the process of removing the black finish from Thorn and then play around with forcing a minor patina.

I will make updates with pics.

This is her now. Loved, so the finish is wearing off naturally, so tomorrow I will just speed it up. :)

Go for it, XanRa. You'll like it, and if you don't, you can always offer it to the guys here, whether sale or trade.

I wanted a nice old look. I love a knife that shows signs of love and a life well lived.
This is my first real knife mod.
Stripped
Hand sanded with #1 steel pad, 220 wetdry paper and 0000 steel wool
Forced a light patina with a mustard rub, then soaked in rice vinegar and spicy pickled sausage liquid. (bought the pickled sausage as a snack and decided to use the leftover juice. My knife smelled good enough to eat.)
Rubbed it down again lightly for a few seconds.
You can't tell in the pics but I sanded the grivory a bit and now they have better grip with a nice dark ash color.

I love the finished product. Tomorrow its back to beating this knife in the woods.

The 'tiger stripes' are looking good. Plan on doing this mod myself but still in the process of gathering info.
What sorta tape did you use? I would think that the stripper would eat through certain types of tape.....

the painters tape stayed on during the stripping? wouldnt happen to have a shot of under the grivory would ya?

The painters tape didn't work well. I forgot to bring my packing tape. I have used that before when removing rust or paint from other surfaces and it worked. So I stripped the tang as well. I will coat under the grips with Rustoleum for high heat. Stuff is for grills and engine blocks. Put to a flame for a few moments to cure the paint on and I will be safe under the grips.

WOuld duct tape work?

You can fix the world with duct tape!

In all honesty though. What you're looking for is water-tight. The paint stripper is liquid, if you're tape keeps the liquid off the good bits, you're fine. I'd test a bit of the stripper on a taped up coin first. See if it eats your tape. If not you should be good. If it does you gotta ask someone smarter den me. XD

Other thoughts include putting just the blade in a bag with the stripper, then dunking it down to the desired length, and waiting. (it's a bag so you can change the shape. Bag should prolly go into a small/med/lg take out cup. Something you don't care about)

My 2 cents.

No. It will not. Never EVER use duct tape with paint stripper. It made a horrible mess, it actually melted into a gooey substance that I had to scrape off with copious amounts of acetone, took me longer than scratching the blade coating off.

Looks nice, Ogre!

Masking tape works fine. I'd recommend putting on the tape and then screw the scales down tight. Then using a fast acting, Methylene Chloride based stripper, brush on just the parts you want to strip and wait about 5 minutes. I used a piece of wood to scrape at the metal to get the coating off. I thinks it's a combo of using the tape with the scales on, during the stripping process and the fast stripper. It's worked good twice for me.

Mental note. Paint stripper + duct tape = satanic goo

Nice to see people calling it as OH SHIT NO WAY DO NOT DO AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Still. I'm a measure twice, cut once type. Which is why I said test the coin :-P

Don't worry I will, I "need" one :D

It'll become part of my edc! Right between my phone and my zippo on my belt- it'll offset my leatherman and maglite on the opposite side nicely!
