Your experience with one SOG Pillar in S35VN is an insufficient sample size to reach a general conclusion about the steel itself.Just think the 3v steel wouldn’t have chipped so easily , kinda sad to have a 200$ knife not take a little punishment and fall apart like it’s made of glass
Your knife may have been defective, perhaps a bad HT. Perhaps an overheated edge on sharpening.
A photo of your chipped Pillar would be helpful.
Any conclusion is also obscured because any knife of any steel can chip if the knife is used in a manner that was not intended.
As others have suggested, if you're into throwing knives, get a throwing knife.
I am also certain that the only knife that can fall apart like it was made of glass would be a knife made of glass.
I've had SOG fixed blades since the 80s in SK5, Aus8, Aus6, MS VG10 and never had one chip. But then, I've never thrown any of them.
This is all independent of the view that perhaps SOG should have chosen 3V for a fixed blade like the Pillar.
