Hey guys how are yah

I just got at ATR not to long ago, and am not to happy with the handles. I have no experience within the field of manufacturing or exactly how a knife company makes money or runs. Will it ever possible though in the future that Spyderco also sells grips for their many aluminum handled knives. Something like carbon fiber, G10 or Micarta that we could just buy from Spyderco and place ourselves. I understand their are many people here that do aftermarkets mods, but after you have bought $120 knife it sort of sucks having to put more money into it by a custom maker. I also want to get the Police, but the handles don't really appeal to me. I know they have a carbon fiber one and a G10 they are very rare and costly when they do come up for sale.(I know there is one listen on fleebay:D)

find some place where you can handle the knives...find one you like, maybe the chinook, military/para or manix/mini and then try trading your atr for the one you like. the would seem to be the simplest and cheapest way for you.

You can always do what many other people do when they feel the grip is too slippery, and that is to add grip tape! I'm certain of the exact name, but it's tape that black grit on the front side that makes it feel like rough sandpaper. It works really well, but it can be a bit abrasive, then again it's probably also the fastest and cheapest of all possible fixes. I've seen many other forumite do this to the plain stainless steel models.
Good Luck!

The ATR has SS or Titanium handles...

OTOH, I understand what you mean. SS handles are slippery. It is true Spyderco makes them pretty ergonomic so you can have a good grip in most conditions, but I wish some SS models come in G-10 myself.

Expanding on the original post a bit, perhaps what he's getting at is why not design knives that are adaptable to user supplied handles/grips?

There'd be a whole cottage industry of people supplying custom add on grips, etc.

The ATR is much more gpippy than the Police. I like my ATR.

I like my ATR over all as a whole, but it does tend to get slippery cause of the sweat. I have always wanted the Police, but now am a bit more cautious of buying it ever since i have held the ATR.

Sometimes they are, and sometimes they're not. That's why different sizes of models of made.
And the answer to your question is probably just a matter of economics.....
Why would someone buy a blade and whole mess of handles at a higher price when they could probably get 1 more of the same!
You, yourself recently bought a seriously customized, even highly pimped Sebbie at about twice the price of an original. Do you think the cost of the knife included the full custom work that was done to it? Probably not. You can always get a custom maker to customize your knife, but it depends on the cost of the knife, how much you like that knife, and the cost of the modifications.

I do thank you for your advise, but I like the ATR and am gonna use the knife for a long time to come. Maybe i wasn't clear in my original question. I am just wondering why can not Spyderco introduce a knife and then have different grips for them on the side. LIke carbon fiber, G10 or micarta so customers would not have to send in their knives to makers and have them do custom work on them.

Shipping both ways of the knife, Time and labour, Materials, A few weeks you also dont have the knife.

Or just go on the spyderco website and order yourself some grips of your choosing.

This grip tape can you get it at home depot, and does it ruin your pants or jean pockets while you take out the knife to use or put back after use.

That's not exactly true. I've seen knives that have had just a few very thin strips applied to strategic locations on the knife to keep this from happening, but it still makes a big difference. For example, the backspacer is a great spot for this. (If your knife has one.)

Hey dave

Simply i would just like to buy any knife i wish in SS handles from Spyderco, And that i can choose to order micarta, G10, or carbon fiber scales from them. I am just at a point I don't have a boat load of money to spend on customizing a new knife from a maker. The cost probably would be more than my knife is worth.

I'l be the first one to say that i truly do not understand why this can not be done. So the forumites here that have more knowledge please chime in.

If you want the ATR with CF handles I would suggest looking at the Stretch II.
They are of similar design, only the Stretch is a little more refined.
Look into them when they come out (should be soon).

I would love another G-10 Police sprint run as well.

I have it infront of me and i'm pretty sure 99.9% that i dont have one. :D
Is it the part where usually filework is done on the spine.

Guys i'm really not looking to buy other knives. I'm just wondering why SPYDERCO CAN NOT OFFER GRIPS OR SCALES AS A ADD ON FEATURE THAT WE CAN JUST BUY FROM THE WEBSITE IF WE SO CHOOSE TO.

take care

p.s i wasn't yelling when i used the capslock just made it that way so everyone could read it better. :D

I think that's a great idea:thumbup:.

Would like to see the Police with a chequered handle, as i think it would improve grip as well as appearance.

What do you think ?
