Will there be a 2017 forum knife?

I think the material options in the poll reflect what GEC made available for us. Not sure if that was based on our cost restriction or what GEC has available for production currently.

"Micarta on barlow" eye candy :)

The Micartas in the poll are professionally made with superior resins under high pressure, making them very reliable and finishable. There are many other choices, made by smaller companies with lesser equipment, for more money!
I think what we have done so far will make a great-looking, durable knife, at the best price.
Now it can be said - I wanted blue Denim Micarta!! Sigh . . . . . . .:(!
:rolleyes:Ah well. . . . . . . .

Now if the natural micarta that appears to be the leading choice presently looks anything like the darker, richer tones presented by your pictures, I would be absolutely thrilled.

Dang, thought GEC's bone linen micarta was in the running. I'm surprised it's "not available" as an option for the forum knife as it's currently on GEC's production schedule for KSF 54. It sure turned out nice on the 77 barlow and 13 congress. Is what it is, just surprised... thought there was quite a few posts interested in it.

If someone with more experience with micarta could help me with something I'd appreciate it...

We keep seeing the lighter tan, rougher looking Natural Canvas and the darker, smoother version of the same moniker.

Is this not the same material, but one just polished more than the other?

And if so, could a person just polish or rough up their scales if we end up with the version of Natural Micarta they did not prefer? I assume polishing the lighter, rougher micarta would be the easier of the two options - but I'm a bit of a simpleton in this regard.

I've also seen some photos of what was once the lighter version which now looks like the darker version due to use and pocket carry.

The natural canvas micarta looks light and a bit rough when new or newly cleaned. The version that I have pictured above is well worn and oiled. The natural oils from your hands or intentional application of others will darken it up nicely. I simply hand rub a bit of chap-stick to them from time to time which is why the nat scales on my barlow above are so dark. BTW, Stonebeard's pictured barlow (post # 734) and mine are in fact the same knife. He was gracious enough to pass it on to me some time ago.

Oh excellent! That actually makes the natural option far more attractive to me. I wasn't terribly excited about the possible lightness, but if it can be darkened with a little use and elbow grease, that will be fantastic. This should also serve to answer Sabercat Sabercat 's query too.

My hope is that they can limit the orders to one per person for a few days to give everyone a chance and then open it up for multiples. Seems like a fair way since its a forum knife.

Since are talking about the micarta, there is a older and newer natural canvas micarta in this pic.

I am good with any of the materials that we voted on, but the natural seems to be the best fit for the knife IMO.

I've done a stint in "the chair" with Gus Kalanzis ramrodding a BFC knife(the Queen Barlow).

When a knife gets selected that I like, I buy a couple. When one gets selected that I don't like, say my piece and leave it alone.

Will discuss if the conversation lends itself to it, Jack Black and I had a good chat last year concerning it.

For some Forumites, it's as much about the process and what the knife represents as it is about the knife itself.

I just have way too many knives to get wrapped up in a single one...there are so many "preciouses" in the mix.

Regardless, it's always real interesting to see the process unfold and I hope that there is a 2017 version produced that I like this year.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Glad to see that you are enjoying the many positive qualities of a canvas micarta barlow. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it, but it went to a great home and I received a knife that is equally worthy

If anyone has not had a chance to enjoy canvas micarta I think you will be very pleased. the #77 canvas barlow is to date my favorite traditional user. I liked it so much that once we parted ways I replaced it with a canvas #71 simply for the texture, grip and durability.

regardless of the final material or color these will be outstanding knives that I have no doubt will please both users and collectors

That is an excellent suggestion texmex03.
I agree in principle.
I say dont panic there will be enough to go round .We porcheteers have our finger on the pulse and are best bet to be first cabs off the rank when the stampede starts.
Lets face it - most people will be buying just one. Some will get two maybe one for themselves and one for a gift to Dad or Son or someone. End of the day why would anyone buy this particular knife for a gift when so many similar ones are around and unless they already have previous years. There are many complicated reasons for doing so.Buy a user and a backup. I dont like to think of anyone missing out who is on board at this stage.
What I think should happen is that after a time limit of say one week which shoild give everybody time to order their one knife then but not until the the duplicate orders should be opened up.
IMO no body needs more than 2 of these for any other reason than flipping which is not a porchworthy practise.
