Will this help or just screw up the handle?

I haven't even come close to putting my mistress through the trials some of these guys have. But, I have beat on her mercilessly for hours and it doesn't even look broken in. I am a pretty big guy too.

Note: I said beat, not abuse; and by that I mean chopping and batoning wood.

I think screws would be bad, especially if you're actually screwing INTO the tube fasteners, that will cut into the tube walls and make them weaker. They're very strong in most cases, unless you plan on hammering being a regular occurence I wouldn't worry. If you really do want to reinforce them though I would get some brass or steel rod sized to perfectly fit the tubes, press fit them with epoxy or cut them off and peen them into place for a permanent fit.

I watched someone drill out a tube fastner on a FFBM and it was a major pain in the butt. Those tubes are strong and have thick walls. No adhesive was under the slabs either.

their strong enough, but if you bash on them enough times, you will sheer them up and down making the scales sit slightly askew. they aren't hardened to 55rc or anything, and they aren't meant to be truly permanent, hence the lack of adhesive.

If your really worried about field based damage, I would suggest going the allen or torx head bolts with standoffs route. you can keep a set or 3 extra standoffs/bolts and 2 allen/torx wrenches without weighing your rig down to much, you just need a small pouch you can attach to the sheath.

I would not suggest trying to reinforce the tubes in anyway, all you'll do is make it harder to remove later on. instead of drilling out the flare, you'll have to drill out the reinforcing material like a broken off tap.

Thank you all for your great opinions. Probably will not use those on Busse knives, but definitely on some home-made device like an axe, for example.

I recall a discussion about knife throwing being tough on the handle tubes. I think Jerry said that's why the generic throwing knives don't usually have handles on them.
