Will this motor/variable spd control work?

Someone else asked about that recently. It is a motor from a treadmill, open design (dust collector!) and the conclusion was NOT a good choice for this purpose.

Besides that, it's a 2HP motor, being advertised at 1-1/2 HP.

Which, from my own looking around for small speed controls, you can get 'em up to 1.5HP all day long and for $35 each; anything over that takes a huge step up in price. Meaning he's using a cheap, under-rated speed controller, probably also out of a treadmill.

It'd probably be fine for small applications where it'd be tough to stall or overload the motor (like a small wood-only bandsaw, or a small benchtop drill press, etc.) and would probably work, at least for a while, if you were building a tight-budget belt grinder just to get you started (put the motor under the table and fit it with a dust cover) but I sure wouldn't recommend it for anything that'll see some serious use.

Doc.

Yeah, I thought it looked a little wimpy, and nothing like what I always see next to all of your grinders..

No, not a super tight budget. I have 1000 or so to spend on setting up a grinder. The 2x72 coote w/8" wheel is $460, so I've got like $500 to spend on a motor. I looked around at surplus center, but was overwhelmed by the variety of motor types. I know I need DC, and 1hp+, but that's about it. :o

Err, on second thought I need to go a couple 100 cheaper, I think. :(

For some reason, my mind never figured out what that 150 lb shipping weight on my paragon meant for the shipping cost.

Would something like a 1.5hp VAC 1725 rpm motor with step pulleys work? Where do you get step pulleys at anyhow?

Thanks for all the help.
