I've had a Buck or two over the years, not a lot though. My last was a Vanguard. I was using it to cut some carpet or something, can't recall now, and the tip broke clean off. Surprised the heck out of me. Anyway, sent it in, they ground down the blade to make it appear as though it came that way, and sent it back. No note, nothing. So I swore off Buck and haven't looked back.

But doggone it all, it seems like every thread I read now somebody's singing the praises of Buck's good ole 420 steel, or Buck this, Buck that. It's gotten to where I just can't stand it anymore!! I've got to get one!

So talk to me oh legions of Buck. Where should I start? I like slippy's, don't care much for liner/frame locks, don't mind fixed blades. Where's that put me?

Thanks and looking forward to some replies!!

You can start by telling us how you broke the tip off, don't try to con anyone here,we've all had plenty of knives over the years, and i've never had any knife,of any brand, have the tip break off just by cutting something,a vanguard has a stout point to start with, that type of blade just breaking off just doesn't happen.I've broke a few tips off of knives over the years doing things a knife wasn't made for, none of them did i try to scam the warranty and get a free knife.Buck is very fair on warranty, but c'mon man a broke tip isn't their fault.

Buck makes a good knife, with a great warranty, and great employees that work hard to put out a quality product.

Try a yellow scaled 301 Stockman. But you might like a small pocket clip Vantage if you will handle one. Start there and we will draw you into our web, never to escape.

Stuff happens, I think you should not have gotten the reground without a phone call first.

But it has been my experience, when sending stuff back to Buck, you have to take care of business and discuss what you want to happen and hear what they can do to for you. A phone call is fast and quick, next is email and then regular mail. You send your knife in, you let them evaluate your problem and then tell you their solution. Then you appove or continue discussion. Now doing things that way takes time so you have to not be in a hurry. No 3 day turnarounds when 'taking care of business' carefully. But they will attempt to satisfy. And you will feel they listened to you.

Grab one of those stockman and/or handle a Vantage and let us hear what you think.

Ok, first of all, learn to use proper punctuation. Once mastered, feel free to respond. Secondly, do not insinuate something you have no personal knowledge of. I've been around a long time friend. I have no reason to be dishonest. Lastly, if this is the way folks are treated, I can find a different sub-forum to frequent.

I spoke with Buck before sending it in. That's how I knew where to send it to. The impression I got was that the knife would either be replaced or I would be given something else equal in value. A friend actually talked me in to sending it in. I had no intention of doing so until that point. I had consigned myself to simply having a knife with a broken tip. Up until this point, I had never dealt with a knife warranty (no need to). When I got it back, I called and asked why they had decided to fix it in this way. They said they had one person doing repair work (apparently they were in some sort of transitionary period or something) and that was what he had decided and they stood by it. I simply said okay and thanks and that was that. I got the impression that they weren't real thrilled with me questioning their decision. It was this reason that I decided to look elsewhere for knives (plenty to choose from!).

I'll check out the Stockman and Vantage. Thanks!

wow.. no need to start jumping on someone like that... I'm really blown away you've made such a rude post...

FYI I had a tip break off (good 1/2") on an old Gerber doing some mundane task, maybe it had micro fractures from using it hard elsewhere IDK but it broke and blew my mind how easy it just snapped..

good thing you're not a spokesman for Buck...

OP: I know you said you're not that fond of liners, lock backs and I'm not that well versed on Buck's product line but I will say I'm a big fan of the new Vantage line... awesome knives... I'm sure others will chime in with more knowledge to help you along your way to buying another Buck..... btw, I had a similar incident with KaBar years ago, I've given them another chance 1 1/2 yrs ago and I'm glad I did...

good luck

It was exactly that way with me! I remember being just shocked at how easy it broke! I recall I just sort of stared at it for a few seconds in disbelief!

Thanks Rob!!

I am not a spokesperson for buck, just a loyal customer of fine knives, sorry if i came off rude, plain and simple, knife tips don't just fall off while doing some regular cutting, not that i've ever seen with any knives, regardless of brands.I would say your knife was inspected at the Buck factory AFTER you sent it in,and obviously they did not decide it was a warranty issue,so they at least tried to help you somewhat with the broken tip.You ask anybody on the forum if they ever had a buck tip "fall off"while just cutting something,i'd like to see how many this has happened to.

Also ,there is no need for personal attacks about my grammar or punctuation,i didn't see any rules about needing perfect penmanship to be a memeber here.

To the original poster, how many companies warranty broken knife tips?I know lots of companies that warranty their knives against defects, never seen one that covers a snapped tip though.

You are correct, two wrongs don't make a right. Sorry for that remark.

Sulaco,

Sounds like you made the proper effort to get satisfaction. Not being a Buck employee all I can say is there are folks highly loyal to certain knives and this forum has a bunch for Buck. Everyone hopes you will stick around and give another knife a try. Everyone loves photos and any you put up will be welcome.

On to discussion for everyone with a buck tip problem, this is not about your issue Sulaco but brings up time to talk about ones along those lines.
My point of view: It seems that broken points/tips is one of the most difficult problems to deal with concerning warranty claims. Many times on this forum we have seen questions and comments on this problem. And Razor was considering all those of the past. Again this is my opinion only, seems like Buck draws a line in the sand on warranty tip breaks, they ususally hedge toward the consumer in almost all other issues. Especially when you contact them and discuss it before sending it in. The knife guys on the factory floor, the reps and a lot of knife people think breaks of the very tips or points on the blades are usually people caused by prying or twisting. So I will shut-up after saying this, everyone should embrace the fact that broken off small tips will be looked at with a critical eye. If it just broke on its on accord be ready to defend your actions. I have been pleased with all other problems I have sent in and have had knives replaced with new ones at no cost other than mailing in fees. I guess I want this to be FYI for some of the newer guys or folks searching for broken tip answers.

Thanks for the info. I had NO IDEA the can of worms I opened with this thread. As far as I knew, I was the only person around who had experienced this. That others have, well, all I can say is this Buck is the only knife I've ever owned that had an actual fracture of the blade. Interesting!

Sulaco, please hang around ,this is a great place with great folks,I'll also mention that i know a lot of people who didn't like Buck knives because they couldn't sharpen them, the older style od edging the blades made it difficult to re-sharpen when they let them get completely dull, and Buck remedied that with the new edge 2k process of edging the blades.

I bet i could start a thread like this on any knife forum regardless of brand, and generate the same can-0- worms effect .

I became a loyal Buck customer back in the early 90's ,I bought a 110 folding hunter and it came with a nylon sheath,a real flimsy non cordura nylon sheath. The first week of deer season i got a deer ,and as i went to feild dress it,i realized i had no knife, the sheath still closed,i took it off my belt and noticed the whole bottom unsewed.I searched all over for that knife, and never did find it.

I sent Buck a letter letting them know their sheaths were pretty low quality, and i sent that sheath back for them to look at.A couple weeks go by,and a parcel arrives in the mailbox, containing a brand new knife to replace the one i lost, and a new Cordura sheath,to replace the one that was defective.

Buck knives aren't warrantied against loss, and i didn't expect anything ,just wanted them to know those sheaths were no good.

That is all it took to make me a loyal customer for life

Just for fun......Where to start?......Start with the right knife for the job. Not current production but this one's from my tool box. They do turn up pretty regularly for not much money.

Model 810 Hawkbill TLC (tile, linoleum, carpet) knife. Sort of a spring steel blade. Doubt I'll ever break it.

What's the matter, Sulaco?

Did you forget your other post on June 16th? Here it is to jar your memory. LOL!
I had a Vanguard I sent in because the tip broke off. I think I had removed it from the sheath and bumped it against a wall or something when it broke. Anyway, I sent it in and they ground it down to look more like a "tip", and sent it back. Pretty shoddy if you ask me so I don't buy anything Buck now. Maybe things have changed, I dunno, but all it takes for me is one bad experience and I take my business elsewhere.

So how did you break it again? And why should you be whining about Buck Knives when they helped you out on a tip that you broke that wasn't even their responsibility?

So quit your whining already. You broke a knife tip. It's your fault. Get over it.

No, I didn't forget my post. I said before, I can't remember exactly what I did to break it. I recall I was using it to cut up some old carpet I had removed and the carpet (along with the padding under it) was laying on some sawhorses. One saw horse was against a wall and the other was further out in the garage. It could have been that the tip or edge or something, came in contact with the wall, but I can't be certain. I don't remember feeling anything that made it stop cutting. I actually sent the tip in with the knife, that much of it came off. I didn't abuse the knife, I was using it.

But you know what, forget it. As I said before, there's plenty of other good brands I can spend my money on.

Thank -you BG-42,I knew this name sounded familiar and it was almost a deja-vu experience,I think i responded on that thread as well.my bad,but i will say your story has changed a bit Sulaco,so how did you break it?I';ve broke a few myself, but never tried scamming anyone to get them fixed,I had them re-bladed at my expense and learned a lesson at the same time, use a pry bar when prying things.

I am beginning to lose my patience with you. I even apologized when you were initially in the wrong, accusing me of something I didn't do. Now, here, you've accused me of attempting to "scam" someone again. I think my time here, as well as my posting history, and my feedback speaks for itself. You guys can have your sub-forum, and your brand. I wonder if Buck knows what sort of folks it has touting it's brand?

I never implied or accused you of anything,at anytime,I said I never tried to scam anyone .I never said a word about you bud.I don't really care what you think about me personally,as you don't know me other than a few replies in a thread on a website. What did you think would happen?Maybe we should all get mad at every company and boycott them each time we don't get our own way.

I will side by Buck on this one,you sent it back, they inspected it and made a decision, that was not in your favor, then they try to accomadate you by a complimentary re-grind of the blade, and you come here expecting the gang to side with you.The old saying is true, you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.Your first thread says it all.You stated in the other thread YOU broke the knife.
