I have a 3JS tester and I am looking at a 4YR. I know very little even about my own tester and nothing about a 4YR. Can anyone give me some basic information about th 4YR. Is it good, bad, mediocre? I see that it has electric and I am not sure why. I assume some kind of motor, but not sure why it would have one. Mine is all manual. I want to test in the "C" scale for knives.

Thanks,
Mike

Not sure on the 4yr but I'm pretty sure the "S" in 3JS is for superficial. I understand that to mean it is for things like sheet metal and am pretty sure it will not do C scale testing. I see them used all the time and almost bought one... You can probably find some info on google on the 4yR

3JS is a superficial and is not what you want. It reads in N scale and like Augus said is for very thin material or case hardened steel. The first one I bought was a 3JS and I ended up scraping it.

Not sure what a 4YR is, but to read in C scale you need one with 150g weights on it.

Don,

Thank you all for the reply. I know from what I have read that the 4YR will do "C" scale. I saw a close up picture and it shows the C scale and the weights needed and you are right, it takes 150

Mike, I thought the 4YR would do C scale but wasn't 100%. It's probably a newer version of the one I have, 3JR, but they made so many different models it's hard to tell. Make sure it has the weights with it, as they can cost more than the machine it self.

Thanks Don. Yes it has the weights with it. It only lacks the diamond indenter. It has a ball indenter and I have a diamond N indenter that I can hopefully sell and buy the diamond C indenter. I am going to look at it this morning.

Thanks for taking time to respond. By the way, I love your work, you are indeed a craftsman.

Mike
