Wilson Rockwell tester weights

I recently purchased a Wilson 4JR hardness tester ($160) but it didn't come with the weights. Just curious if anyone has this model and could weight their weights for me? (Wilson JR or OUR series testers would work since both use same weight set, maybe even others)

From what I read it is a 25:1 ratio so for the C scale 150kg I will need 6kg. Just wanted to verify since I am not sure of the arm and hook weight is accounted for in this 6kg. My plan is to somehow source some 2"-2.5"round stock, tap the top install a rod with hook, then cut and drill until I get it to exactly 6kg.

I had a similar question recently posted and it was said that the 6kg does include the hook arm. Based on the advice I got, I'd say your plan sounds good. Good score!

I think there are 2 weights for the C scale, 10kgf preload and an additional 140kgf to make 150 kgf total. That’s 22lb and 308lb for a total 330lb.

You could use a bathroom scale and a known weight to measure the ratio and you can use anything that will give the required weight(s) and fit the space available for the weights themselves. If you have welding facilities, a couple of bits of pipe with an end cap and filled with shot would be easier than machining from solid.

I have a different machine and I am a long way from it, but I think the preload on mine is done without a weight applied, so the weight gives the 140kgf. There are actually several weights to cover different scales as supplied, but if the only one of interest is the C scale, only the one weight is needed. A bag of shot on a piece of string would even do the job if the string is the right length.

This. Weld an end cap on one end of a tube, take another end cap/hook, and add shot untill tohe total weight is just under where it needs to be. If you are using a TIG machine, calculate the weight of an appropriate length of filler metal (I would suggest the circumfrence of the tube that will contain the shot for the length and use 3/32 filler). Leave the total weight a hair low and add a couple of short beads as required to nail the weight.

So i purchased this on ebay, best offer plus $90 shipping. The seller is now telling me shipping/frieght might be more so at the point ($250) that I might back out. I guess i should have waited until i actually had it. I appreciate all the help and messages. I make knives for fun, try to do two a month for friends/family and no real desire to do more then that so a tester while cool is not really needed.

Is it listed as $90 shipping in the auction? If so then by eBays standards he can only charge you $90.

I am setting him up with a PVC tube and end caps with lead shot to make it exactly 6000 grams, including the hanger.

Stacy if you need more lead I got tons of it, literally. Could put it in a small flat rate box.

I talked to the wife and she said your locked in at you origanial price, $90 shipping. The sell can’t change the shipping price after the auction ends and you won the item. So I would not back out of this deal.

Yeah following JT's advice, i called ebay. And they said not to pay. The seller just asked for $270 more! Which is crazy (MO-VA) What will probably happen is he will just put "No longer available" and refund my money. So very much doubt i will be getting it. Bad feedback is an option. This is not a small seller, lots of industrial, commercial gear re seller. So sorry to waste all of your time.

You all, and others who IM-ed me rock! I dont post much, just read and research alot, so my first real ask for help and the overwhelming response has been greatly apprciated! Thank you.

But I did not think he could be the one to back out of the sale. I thought once an item sold the seller is locked in. Only the buyer can back out I thought.

Wait he asked for $270 more including the $90 for shipping allrrady. Sounds like he was not happy with the price it sold for so he is trying to get ya for more money. If it was me I would pay the original $160 if I had not already and let the chips fall where thy may. We have had this happen to us. We keep our side of the deal and ship for what we said it would cost.

It was bought and paid for it within 10 mins of him listing it. Shipping was calculated at $90.22 from the start. If he did make a mistake, and was honest with me about it, i would just let it go. Right now I really dont think it costs over $350 to ship. Using my gi bill now for night school and have very limited access to a tester there but would be nice to have my own. Plus the help getting weights, excitement on a deal, and paid for new diamond penatrators. End of the day i will get my money back so not really out.

If it was me I would stick to my guns. You paid and he needs to ship. I would not except any cancellations from him. Tell him he needs to ship or you will be forced to contact eBay about a non shipping issue. It’s his responsibility to hold up his end of the deal. You paid him exzact my what he was asking. There is no way it costs $350 to ship that. He is trying to screw you and I would put my foot down.

To give you an idea. Grizzly ships there hardness tester for $89. And I think it’s about the same size, maybe a tad smaller as it’s 200lbs. But the one you bought does not have any weights with it so it’s not as heavy. Stick to your guns man, I got your back. Where is it located and where are you located. I bet you could find a knife maker that would pick it up for you and save you his shipping cost and then ship it for what it actualy costs.

Hell you could call his bluff and tell him you might be in there area in a week and can just pick it up. See what he says to that lol

Seems the freight company wants a ton of extra for residential delivery. I am working with Roxport to see if they can change the delivery to my store, where it should be the normal rates.

Tester just arrived. Shipped on its side, but that isn't unusual. Besides the oil dripping out the dashpot, it looks OK. I am waiting to get with Roxport and get it to him. I'll make the weights this weekend and he can start cleaning it up and learn how to use it. He will need some test blocks, but I can loan him some in the meantime.
