Wilson Rockwell tester weights

Dang, Stacy, I wish I lived near you! >;-) Talk about above-and-beyond....

I'm posting something in a new thread about hardness testing - there's gotta be a better/cheaper way, somewhere between files and $3,000. :-)

Above and beyond indeed! The seller was supposed to give me a call when it shipped, he did not. I get a message from Stacy today, and he had it unpacked, inspected and was cleaning it up! Now he is making weights! I definitely do not deserve this, but very appreciative, and need to know what i can do to repay the favor.

Tester just arrived. Shipped on its side, but that isn't unusual. Besides the oil dripping out the dashpot, it looks OK. I am waiting to get with Roxport and get it to him. I'll make the weights this weekend and he can start cleaning it up and learn how to use it. He will need some test blocks, but I can loan him some in the meantime.

For test blocks I could make some. Not as good as bought ones but I can heat treat and surface grind them and then test them on my machine. I could then send them to you and you could double check my numbers and if good he should be set

JT,
That would be a really nice thing to do.
I think a set of blocks at 54, 58, 62, and 66 would be really useful for knife testing. Thom can get with you or you can ship them to my store.

Thom,
What you can do to pay this back is help someone else out when you have the chance. It doesn't have to be a knife thing. I can tell you that the real winner when you do an act of kindness is you.
My favorite is to pay for the coffee or food of the fellow in line next to me at Wawa or Subway. They never saw me before, and I will likely never see them again, but it makes a change in both of us.

The winner is me because I get to play with the heat treat oven and surface grinder :)

Seriously, this is crazy. Amazing support. I just wanted some basic info, and advice about a tester. I read and search a lot on here but seldom post, cannot wait until I am at the point where I can help someone else on here, but will just do something good locally for now.

I may put you to work next saturday. I am moving the stuff from one storage unitbto another. It will be 2-3 hours work for three or four guys/gals.

I don’t know if I’m going to be able to hit 66RC on on of these O1 slugs but I’m gonna try lol.

Stacy I would help you move if I was closer.

No I don’t sell it. I have horded it for a lot of years. I cast my own bullets and back in the day I was shooting 500 rounds a saterday. I have probably 1000lbs left and looking for more. Plus I cast my own bullets for my muzzle loaders

JT. I gotta ask. What sort of wheel are you running your surface grinder belt over in the picture?

I use a normal surface grinding stone wheel. Works AMAZING and is very smooth. You dress the wheel so it’s perfectly concentric that way the belt leaves a perfectly smooth finish.

Well the tester is in the garage. Had a good afternoon with Stacy, and others filling up a uhaul, then unloading. (rewarded with beer, talk and tour of his workshop!)
Cleaning it up now, going to fill up the dashpot shortly with some 10w non detergent oil then Re read the manual. Two penatrators also arrived today from China.
So not only did Stacy build me a weight and allow me to have it shipped to his shop to save money, but he also cleaned it up, and replaced the dial cover that was cracked with lexan. Great day, great group! Next time i will bring the beer!

Sorry, I got your gage blocks done I just need to temper them down to the desired hardness.

No worries JT, still need to clean it up, and make some knives to test. (Finals this week, family, active duty, need to find a place for us to live has me pretty busy).
I think i am missing two screws anyways, should be able to get locally. Two screws and two square nuts it looks like. Will need to verify.

So everything was stiff, so a full cleaning, and disassembly completed. Used a heat gun, picks, razor blades to get the dried up oil/grease off. Relubed, dash pot filled, and missing nuts made and fitted. So getting consistant readings on some 1084 test samples i made. But still need to verify with known hardness, So JT if the offer still stands let me know and i can paypal you to cover costs/shipping. Once done, if any new makers in the area (Chesapeake Va) that want to test their blades let me know. (Free and beer included)
