Shiny! The pattern of a normal Umnumzaan leaves me a little meh and even this one gets a bit too fine as nyefmaker mentioned. The satin treatment makes it eye candy.

I can't believe that they give you the awesome lanyard and do the milling for not too much more money! I love CRK so much

I was thinking it was just sanded with paper. But, I guess the rays (grooves) could've been taped off or covered in some way as well.

Is this 600 grit sandpaper? Or some type of blasting media?

Blasted media would affect the rays :)

This is from the knife maker who did the Umnumzaan Jim Smyth a local maker, It was posted on another forum when he originally did the knife.
Hope this helps. *** Rick ***

The knife is completely disassembled (I bought a Reeves take down kit). The flats on the outside of the knife are hand sanded on a flat granite block. If you dont have a granite block I know other knife makers that use flat plate glass. I use spray adhesive to hold the sandpaper flat. Started with 220 grit till all the blasted media texture was about gone. Then went to 400 grit and then 600 grit. Always keeping the scratch lines going the length of the handle. Then I used 0000 steel wool soaked in WD40 lightly rubbed lengthwise with the scratch marks on the surface. This will give the Titanium a nice creamy look.

Key points are keeping the Ti flat while doing this and taking off as little Ti as possible. You dont want to get into the pattern or round off the edges. I also use Duct tape cut off a little shorter than the piece I am sanding/polishing. Roll the duct tape into a barrel shape with the sticky side on the outside. Place that on the Ti piece your working. This allows my fingers and thumbs a place to hold the flat piece on without slipping off and keeping constant contact with the flat granite block. If your doing this with regular metal that has carbon in it you can use a high powered magnet to hold the piece.

This mod took about an hour for that and satin finishing off the pocket clip. This works for doing any Titanium.

Thanks Rickster. Does anyone know the grit and media type used by CRK? This polishing is something that could be done, then taken back to a factory finish if you don't like it.

Was the inside of the handles polished and underside of the pocket clip? What about the frame lock? That thing looks awesome, I am definitely doing this to mine!!

If I do this I was thinking of polishing the inside of the scales. Seems it would be easier running something in there to get all of the lint and nasty stuff out of it.

It's probably best to leave the inside of the scales as they are, you may or may not mess up the fit on the knife parts and perhaps cause some problems with the action too. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
