What are your opinions of the Wilton square wheel grinders? Are the good? How do they compair to the kmg? Thanks for the help.

I have both...use them for different purposes.

The Square wheel for scale removal and "horsing",
and the KMG for more precise grinding and handle work.
I run the KMG much slower than full speed.

If I were now to have only one, It would probably be
the KMG....simply because Rob listens to knifemakers,
and has made more accessories available than are
available for the Square Wheel.

Like Russ, I have both a Square Wheel and a KMG. I purchased my
Square Wheel from Koval knives many years ago...in fact at the time, I paid a total of $585.00 which included the shipping. Its been a very reliable machine. The drawbacks are availability of parts, and if you purchase the single speed version, its WAY too fast. Before they were ever available, I had a slow down pulley custom made for mine, which made it a much better knife making machine. I've gone through several sets of the various bearings, and 3-4 toggle switches, but its still doing its job after over 25 years of use.

If your looking to purchase your first grinder, I would have to choose the KMG. It's a machine made for knifemaking, and in my opinion much better built that the Square Wheel grinders of modern day.

I also have a Wilton that I have had for years. I agree with Ed on the speed of the standard machine. I upgraded mine with a Leeson variable speed motor. It makes it much more user friendly. If you can afford it buy a variable speed grinder no matter what brand you decide on.

I have had my Wilton since the mid 1980's. It s a good machine, as others said I found the single speed too fast. One year after using it, I got the Leeson DC variable speed motor for it, making it a versitile machine. It was a pricy upgrade, but worth every penny. I also got the small wheel kit for it at the same time allowing me to easily grind out finger grooves with the small 1/2 inch wheel.

I highly recommend this machine.
