Great stuff, Scott! About how long did it take you to cut through that sucker?

It took about 2 hours with rests and pictures. It was quite a workout! I almost talked myself into breaking it up in two days but just kept going.

Wow amazing job, salvo! I was going to try to compete, but sheesh i dont think i can hang with you. My wife really likes that sheath, though.

Go ahead and get chopping in the back 40's voracious, i am new to sheath making and i am making a lot of sheaths in order to hone my skills, so i will also give a sheath to the runner up in order to make this contest more interesting. i started dying the leather today so it will be ready in a day or two..

Remember to measure around the tree or log like Salvo did..

The sheath is from Buy Brown, David Brown gave a sheath to my daughter's boy friend for his military service, I had to order this one for my 1311 at the same time! Thanks again David.
Lennox I was apprehensive to post my log cut, afraid I set the bar a little high and may put a damper on the competition, your the man!

Salvo, I am glad you set the bar high, a chopping contest is supposed to be a bit of a workout

Well, Lennox, I was inspired by salvo's work and did go out and chop some. I will have suzy post pictures when she gets home. I'll give it a try, but it's tough on the tablet.

Nice Jody!
My muscles are still a little sore from Saturdays work out, but I cant wait to get out and chop something else up.

The sheath for the runner up is in the making, here is a few pics of the basic shape and look, the color in the carvings and on the sheath in general will change quite a bit in the next staining and antiquing step.

This looks like a toothpick next to salvos monster but figured I would add a little something to this thread. I chopped this one down as part of my NMFSH, KDSH & B11 comparison. If I get a chance to get back out Ill try for a bigger one, although not many old trees in my area.

That looks great Lennox, I really like your style!
Hope you can extend the contest time a few weeks? I would love to see more competition! Maybe get a few hogs and piglets out of there easy chair and start chopping! LOL

I'll get out there tomorrow after work, if i get sent out on a job. If i don't go to work i may get that sucker finished.

Ok i got out and finished today. I'll get pics up later. I brought my aftershock bolo and nmfshcg to do a little side by side comparison. Both dry arm shaving sharp, convex on the as bolo, factory v edge on the
nmfsh. Now, this is extremely hard, frozen red oak, a recent blowdown from the hurricane. In the outer, softer layer under the bark (cambrium? ) they both bit deeply, the fatter mnfsh more so. Once i got to the MUCH harder inner part, the heart, if you will, the difference became much more apparent. The lighter bolo was literally bouncing out of the cut. While the fatty was still biting with authority.
Nmfsh is hands down winner of that head to head on large, hard wood.

Thanks Salvo i really enjoy this new hobby of mine, I have bought all kinds of tools for leather work and i try to get better at it every day.. (and to the mods: I will never sell any sheaths because my sheath making is about me learning a craft and nothing more)... But what i will do however is give them away to deserving contest winners..

The contest will run for a few more weeks so do like Salvo said, get out of your easy chairs and start chopping  :D

So I finished chopping my log a week and a half ago, but between work and tablet problems I am finally posting pics.almost.jpgfinished 43.jpg43.jpg

Great work Jody  The second sheath up for grabs in this contest is finished.. :D Will post pics when i get home on Thursday...
