I am a NEWBIE, but I really enjoy the compassion of so many of you on these forums that I figure, what the hell, let me pay a little back. I could never win even ONE free lottery ticket, so my chances of EVER winning a knife are zippo, SO I HAVE ONE TO GIVE, (and I have way less than 50 knives)
One NIB BenchMARK Blackie Collins premier design Sidewinder auto. This is the original model with ATS-34 steel and the metal clip. All you need to do is EXPLAIN why some Florida auto knife dealers are selling out or hiding their autos, while others could not care less.A very short, RIGHT TO THE POINT post and I will give it until Sunday, 08/12/01 at 2:00 Pm. Must be at least 50 replies.....wolf:confused:

Contest or not, I would classify this post as a troll. I didn't say YOU are a troll, this post is.

A troll is defined as a post meant to be provacative and provoke passionate or emotional responses. This is not a subject that most members here will speak freely on, so it's fruitless to try to instigate a discussion.

I think the answer is pretty simple. Dade County(Greater Miami), Broward County(Greater Ft. Lauderdale) and Palm Beach counties are the most "liberal" in the state with the rest of the state being more "conservative". Anti-weapons laws are more likely to be enforced with more zeal in these counties than in the rest of the state by more "liberal" states attorneys offices located down here.
(Remember that Janet Reno was/is from Dade County).

If I was a storefront FFL or sporting goods store in South Florida, knowing the liberal bias of the local states attorneys I would not want to risk losing my business licenses, getting fined, and or possibly going to jail for the sake of selling some auto knives.

For the record, other than the "cool" factor, IMO autos have no real advantage over most one hand opening non-auto knives.

wolfmann601...,

I'm going to enter your knife give-away contest, 'cause I'd really love to have an "auto", but if you sent it to me via the Post Office, it would probably get lost (STOLDEN) while in-route like those thumb-studs that you sent to me did.:(.

As far as Florida goes...Don't forget how the Bush VS Gore Presidential Election went with them...They couldn't even vote right on THAT one, so how do you expect them to do anything good while voting on our "knife-issues"? I think the Florida knife-dealers are just trying to do the best they can, with this BAD hand they were recently delt to them.:).

So...Do I win???.:D.

Alex - I'm with you, but don't say that out loud!!!!!! Those freaks will try to ban all one-hand opening knives if they figure out how easy to open they are! Because obviously, knives are bad, and therefore making them easy to use is bad and must be discouraged. After all, if *I* don't need or use something, and it has no value to me, then it has no value *period* and anyone who disagrees is dangerous and antisocial and should probably be jailed, for the safety of everyone including themselves, poor lowbrow goons . . . .

BTW, I am in fact a liberal, I just don't like idiots. Contrary to popular opinion, the terms are not necessarily synonymous.
:barf:

PS note - note no explanation of FLA b/c I'm not entering the contest - I live in Chicago, which is bizarrely as bad as Kalifornia in terms of protecting residents from the inherent dangers of freedom and self-responsibility, therefore receiving such a cool knife might spell my doom . . .

A TROLL POST!!!!! Man what a low blow. Why is it a troll? Because it is designed to illicit a provocative debate on a FORUM? I am a NEWBIE, but am I to believe that we all must have the same views? If I am ever going to learn about knives and I just happen to throw a knife in the pot to get some of thelurkers to speak up maybe the politics NOT only in Florida, but soon coming to Every State might just change. I guess I should have said pick a number from 1-10.That's stimulation. The knife I picked was just by blindly reaching into my safe. It could have been one of a 100 in my very small and modest NEWBIE collection. It just happened to be the Benchmark auto .But I want some imput from you Masters with 5,000 posts who know knives to TEACH people like me DYING to learn. Florida confused the hell out of me. Steve at Gun's N Knives, a pretty big Brick and mortar had NO auto's for sale and was scared to death if he had ONE in his store out goes his FFL. I go to the Thunderbird Flea Market in FT. Lauderdale, a mega outdoor market with clone dealers and custom dealers all over the place, business as usual, and I find a guy parked way in the corner selling out of his trunk with a little paper sign that says "bladed tools forsale". A MT vector NIB $100bucks, a MT Socom DA $100 Bucks. he had 15 MT's, MOD's Benchmades, a even a few sets of Henckels and he is petrified and just wants an empty trunk. A grand cash for the trunkload, all NIB. He does not care, he is OUT OF BUSINESS. So I just got to know why?????? I know Government has their heads up their Ass, but why is NO one taking this seriously?. I can screw the contest, if its a TROLL, and I apologize. forget it. keep ignoring issues and I will just lurk and learn, but do me one small favor. READ the Fourt Circuit Court Decision, and the proposed Law by Schulmer and kennedy to force anyone who EVER brings a child to an ER for treatment that they will be returning to a GUN FREE home. And the Addendum regarding the new FEDERAL definition of a "tactical"knife. Then call this a troll post. Forget it, Just pick a number from 1-999.
On Sunday, IF someone picks it I will sent them the knife.......wolf

Simple. Florida is better than most of the union in terms of knife law enforcement. The ban on autos is fairly irrational, since a one-hand opener is as fast in experienced hands, and a fixed blade for that matter, but florida is starting to crack down so they can catch up to the rest of us liberal states...

Welcome newbie wolf-dude!

I don't see this as trolling by any means. It might have been better suited for the Automatic forum, but being as yer giving away a purty nice blade there, it gets more exposure here.

If I understand your question about Dealers in Florida, it is why some do and some don't as a result of the problems caused by the recent court decision against auto knives.

I'd say it's based upon the knife dealer, and their willingness to take a stand on this decision. Some are cautious and don't need the hassle. Some are cavalier, and aren't going to be intimidated by this court imposed law. It appears to me that in either case the particular dealer is making a business decision, no more and no less. Some dealers who don't make a lot of money on autos might be less inclined to fight, and vice-versa.

Thanks for offering a contest, especially from a newbie!

My #311

I really really really want this. I don't ask for much. I'm a nice person. I don't cause any trouble. I keep my nose out of other people's flame wars. I'm cute, funny, smart and oh so modest.

My number is 579.

And no, this isn't a troll post at all. There may have been better venues to post this question, but so what. It's knife content, and it's getting responses. I hope no newbies or bastid's, or old timers or anyone ever feels stifled here.

I agree with what many of the opinions have been here, and am disturbed by wolfmann's story about the guy at the show, selling out of the trunk. That's what things have deteriorated to, where people with hobbies and passions about beautiful blades have gotten so scared of the police and the government that it's just seemingly easier to get rid of the offenses, than fight the good fight. There's many of us trying to stand up for our rights, and help keep weapons laws tough enough to be safe, yet liberal enough to be reasonable. It pisses me off to walk around a Street Fair in Denver, and be asked by a cop, 'whats clipped in your pocket?' WTF do you care what's in my freakin pocket? I'm walking around with a 3 year old in a stroller, wrangling 3 teenagers at the same time. The most dangerous weapon I have on me is a frozen water bottle in the baby's bag. And you need to harass me about what's in my pocket?

Florida is no different than any other place, in theory. Every town, city, state, country..is divided into parts where different laws and different attitudes apply. Most of it stems from history . I know, for instance that there is a huge chance I am going to get harassed about wearing a knife in Denver, but not in neighboring Northglenn. The laws are the same, but the attitude is different.

Does this make any sense at all? Have I completely gone off the deep end? Probably. I'm done ranting. As you were, ladies and gentlemen.

Danelle

Perhaps I spoke too soon and jumped to conclusions about your intentions. For that I apologize.

I have been around here for a few years and in my experience, any open discussion about autos, their legalities, and especially the ins & outs of how a non-FL resident can get his mitts on one, is usually met with deafening silence.

So, let the debate and the contest carry on, if the replies will support it.

Since I insulted you, I won't post a number to enter the contest - but I will give an opinion. You already have the answer, when you describe the freedom one guy has to sell out of his car trunk or fleamarket table vs. the guy scared of losing his FFL. The difference is the fleamarketeer has not much to lose, except his inventory. The FFL will lose his livelihood. I'm assuming the FFL sells guns as his primary business, with knives as a sideline. Do you have any idea how difficult it is these days to get a new FFL, or worse, recover a suspended one? This guy is not going to risk his business and family income over the esoteric appeal and murky legal pit of automatic knives. It's just not worth it to him. They could padlock the store and impound his gun inventory as part of the investigation process, before it even gets to court. Wipe him out in one afternoon. It's not a hill most men would choose to die on.

Hey, thanks for the contest. And don't let a little debate get you down.

Hi,
Florida may have tough laws about autos, but Canada's are draconian. I suspect something like the Ken Onion knives would be considered illegal under the "spring assist" rule.
That being said, my # is 911.
Were I to win it, I would ask you to auction it off for the gentleman who is having "house-keeping" troubles.
Hope "I" win it...
Rob

SORRY GUYS!!!!! I apologize.... I am NEW, I am a NEWBIE. I just wanted you, the MASTERS to explain the utter stupidity. The Knife was maybe a bad move, but WTF, I have some knives I bought when I FIRST started out and locked into an AUTO ONLY mentality. That has since changed. I wanted to stimulate a DEBATE, not JUST auto Versus manual, but what the FLORIDA RULING is going to do to ALL OF US if something is not done. A well-lubed, well broken in Spyderco that can be "flicked" open gets defined by some political small Time Police Chief or even a BIG TIME Sheriff and orders are cut to the poor Street LEO's to CONFISCATE!!!! So I was PISSED. So I am sorry, maybe it was a bad topic.I like the 1-999 better., and I just am very very very thankful I did not grab MY WEGNER, My Custom Microtech HALOII or the only other real knife in my collection, a Gorgeous Custom Dalton. It just happened to be an original Benchmark sidewinder ATS-34 metal clip AUTO, and SUNDAY, I will ANNOUNCE the WINNER. AND if NO ONE picks the number, the CLOSET gets the BLADE!!!!!!
But, please, cut me some slack.I am learning every day, this is a complex world, and I am so addicted to knives that I just cannot get enough info. I sit here and read read read, and this ONE TOPIC just was not answering this ONE question, so I figured I would try the contest crap. I meant NO HARM. We all know BIG BROTHER has his head up his ass, but NOW he wants his hands on our knives!!!!!! I just was trying to understand why I could walk around Florida with a 30 inch Sabre, but not a 3 inch auto. That's the question..... AM I back on the good boy list and OFF the S-list????
Thanks....Wolf:o :o :o

No can do.

"New Jersey - Code of Criminal Justice - 2C:39-3 e. Certain
weapons. Any person who knowingly has in his possession
any gravity knife, switchblade knife, dagger, dirk,
stiletto... or razor blades embedded in wood, ballistic
knife, without any explainable lawful purpose, is guilty
of a crime of the fourth degree."

I have a job that requires security clearance (Financial industry), a wife & kids, and an intense dislike for metal toilets and confined spaces. If I won, it would have to be held in escrow in lieu of a trade for a manual folder. ;)

A few years ago I visited Tijuana, and was tempted to buy an auto and bring it across to CA. Aside from the fact that they were mostly overprices stiletto junk, I decided it just wasn't worth it for something that I couldn't, and wouldn't carry back home in NJ anyway.
I think they are cool, but not worth the risk for me.

Good luck everyone who enters the contest, and welcome to BFC, wolf.
