I'm a sucker for any new chopper. When I got my Atlanta Cutlery Catalog, there was this new "Suvival" knife from Windlass. It is supposedly computer control oven tempered 1095 high carbon steel, but I saw hardly a spark while sharpening it. It acts more like stainless.
The knife has a 14.5" long, 3/16" thick, 2" wide recurve blade. I'd call it a bolo. It has a very comfortable 6.5" long rubber handle. The knife weighs 20oz with the balance point about 3" in front of the handle. It does machete work with ease, slicing through wax myrtles and and other brush like any good machete, in spite of its thickness and weight.
It handles palmettos with ease.
It did a great job of splitting this maple in one whack.
And it seems to chop as well or better than most 14" machetes.
I kept checking the edge for damage, but it held up well.
My initial impression is that this is a pretty good knife. It has good feel and balance, making controlled strikes easy.
In the near future I will compare it to the Becker Patrol, BRKT, and Tramontina bolo machetes. If nothing else, it beats them in comfort with that rubber handle.
It sells for $59.95, or about 10 times the Tram.
