So Ive been drawing up a design for a more of a tactical knife, and I may decide to try a window breaker at the butt.
Now for heat treating. I do my 1084 in a small propane forge that can only heat small parts of the blade.
So if I harden the edge. Then harden the butt, would heating the butt affect the already hardened edge?

Because of my limiTed forge size, I cant harden both at the same time.....
Any tips would be great.

That's rather difficult to properly do. I would have the breaker a separate piece. Then you could make it out of anything you want. What do I do ? Carry a a large automatic center punch.A big advantage is that I don't have to swing it to break the glass !It's hard to swing when you're under water as so many of those incidents are .

Ok. Ive watched Aarons newer vids where hes got his EvenHeat going so its all done at once. The towel trick seems like could be a good idea but I still think it would get over 400°. (Tempering Temp)

I used to heat treat 1084 in my little forge with a single burner. I would tie a wire through the lanyrad hole, and hold the wire with pliers. Then slowly move the blade back and forth through the flame (edge down) until it was all up to temp, and quench. I did this with larger blades too. It just takes a bit longer to heat it up.
