Wine Harvest

Great post, and thread idea!Would really see others chime in with their own wine making. Big or small. I don't know the first thing about it myself. But vineyards are catching on around where my Dad lives, in the mountains of Virginia. The background to the photo of your vineyard looks a lot like where I grew up. Most of our land was to steep for crops to, we had one area near the house we had our personal garden and another that wasn't to steep we raised corn for our cows. Thanks again for the great pics and all Zan, I really like that your family has such a good tradition, and your keeping it alive!

Still waiting for L lambertiana to chime in with his grape knives. I found them very interesting and I'm still shocked that noone uses them around here.

Yep, these grape knives are much easier for me to use than shears. The vast majority of grape harvesting around here is done with knives like these:

I should also note that although most people around here use the grape knives like mine, there are some who prefer shears. But they do not use standard pruning shears - there are grape shears sold around here that work better than pruning shears:

The shears on the left have curved blades, while the shears on the right have straight blades. I like the one with the curved blades better.

Great, L lambertiana ! I haven't seen knives like yours around here, but we do have some shears that are similar to yours and are intended specially for grapes. The spring system is different though and they all have straight blades. I couldn't get a shot of them the other day, folks were using them. :D I agree that they work better than the pruning ones, makes access easier.

Great thread ISKRA. I especially liked the picture of your vineyard and surrounding countryside.

Here's a Buck Utility Knife I have that could be used for harvesting grapes I suppose. At any rate, I think it's appropriate since the knife your showed in your initial post is a Buck.

Looking forward to more posts about your wine making and perhaps more pictures of your neighborhood.

Thanks Modoc ED Modoc ED ! You're right, that Buck looks useful for such an environment. I haven't seen this model before.

I don't think Buck makes it anymore. I've had that knife since 1990 or so.
