Yea, sorry Mist, that entry is disqualified, can't look better than mine.....:p

Eh...you might have gotten carried away a bit on the burning but considering the length of the blade you were using and for a first time I thought you did pretty damn good bro.

Lol, I knew it would be...wasn't done with just a machete. Besides I wouldn't use the same material for multiple contests anyway...what would be the fun in that? :)

after the pumpkin contest not going the way I envisioned I almost afraid in this contest I may lose a hand or an arm.

here is my spoon-fork , i did at night after work so every time to take a pic I had to go inside . all was done with my Evil Junglas .

That spoon/fork is awesome! Really well done using a knife that big.

And that is one wicked picture!!!

I've never done this before, especially with a full-size machete, so it was educational. Used an 18 inch Ontario Knife Co machete which is probably 30 years old at least. I built a Texas sized spoon with a prybar at the end out of mesquite. It ain't pretty but you can put the smack down with it. I call it the Hostile Environment Survival Spoon. :D

I've never carved a wooden spoon with a knife before, let alone with a machete, so this took me QUITE a bit of time to do.

I have a number of machetes I could have used, from 12" up to 22" (and just received my new Junglas this week after I had already started) but I decided to use my Lite Machete to keep it truer to the nature of the contest:

I had a branch that needed to be trimmed off my tree anway, so down it came:

I used a section of the branch to start carving; in retrospect, I started with WAY too big of a piece, so had to remove a LOT of wood.

I purposely chose a piece that had a bit of an "elbow" to it before where I wanted the spoon end to be. I didn't think about the elbow having a big knot and the wood being pretty hard to carve there.

I used the tip of the machete to "drill" out a bit of a recess, before using a coal to help it along.

After spending a LOT of time burning, and scraping away the burnt wood, I managed to get the spoon hollowed out a bit.

I kept a hone handy to keep touching up the edge on the machete; it made a pretty good plane for smoothing out the handle.
OOPS! Managed to slide my hand along the blade a bit, getting a little cut to go along with the burns from attempting to hollow out the bowl of the spoon :).

All in all, not too bad for my first wooden spoon, although it is heavy enough to be a club also :D . At least the handle came out pretty smooth.

I hope I don't get counted off for the sheer amount of time it took me to carve it :) . Although I was tempted to use my Junglas after it came in the mail, I stuck with using the Lite Machete.

This went a lot better than expected for my first spoon. I made a big one, which I'm sure made it easier though.

I was shaving down the handle and bit a littler deeper than intended, but that gave me an idea for a handle on it.

Finished! No blood lost, but my arms and hands are sore.
