Winner chosen in post # 41How about a Gold Membership giveaway to a new(er) member

The fact that the forum as a whole is mostly populated by people being genuine decent humans is one of the drawing factors of this board.

Emspop- Thanks for the giveaway and the opportunity to enter. As I said above, lots of generosity around here. Now that I have actually started to post, I’m sure the count will go up quick enough. But, don’t expect me to post any pictures any time soon. Like I said, baby steps.

Im a new member and I would love the opportunity to enter .....lol, unfortunately Im not a newbe- but my knowledge is around there lol.

Nice one Clay - very generous of you - I suggest to the newer members here to grab this- what a great thing to do!

Thanks for the generous GAW

My very first knife was probably a cheap novelty Sheffield slip joint but my first real knife was my uncles old Royal Navy rigging knife. I was around eight years old and managed to cut myself quite badly with it while whittling on a branch. The blade caught on a knot and slipped catching me on the thigh. a trip to the emergency room ensued.
It never soured my love for knives in general or that particular knife. I still have a pretty good scar on my leg from it to this day and still have the knife.

Outstanding! I just love to hear these stories and the bonus pic well...perfect! Thank you for entering and sharing your story and pics. Welcome to the porch!

Clay, I think this is an excellent GAW!:cool::thumbsup::thumbsup: (Even if I don't qualify to enter!:rolleyes::D)
It's generous, it's a chance to experience the benefits of Gold Membership, the required stories are interesting.:cool:
(My favorite GAWs are the ones where the entrants reveal something about themselves and/or their knives, or are required to actively participate in some other way. Shoot, I often "participate" in a GAW even if I'm not entering!)
Kind of inconceivable to me that more folks aren't entering!:eek:
As Yogi Berra allegedly once said, "If the folks don't want to come out to the ball park, how are you gonna stop 'em?" :D:p

I couldn't agree more with what many others have said:this is a wonderful GAW and I'm quite confused that it hasn't attracted more entries. Especially now that the new (can I still call it that?) software doesn't facilitate email communication between members. The ability to PM other members is the biggest draw of an upgrade membership for me and there have a been several times lately that I wish I'd been able to communicate with other members privately, but they haven't had gold membership. If only they'd enter this GAW... :)

Clay, thanks for offering this GAW up for our newer members. I hope they take you up on it.

Thank you my friend. I’m rather surprised there haven’t been more entries as well... of course the ones we do have are excellent!

I don't think I qualify for this giveaway, because I registered about a year and a half ago. But since I'm relatively new here I'll share some thoughts anyway for fun. Thanks for the giveaway, I'm also looking forward to reading more entries.

My first knife was a black cellidor SAK, probably a Tinker, but I can't remember the details perfectly. My parents got it for me for approximately my 18th birthday. Sadly I have no pictures of it - I carried it for less than a year before I lost it, and my keys attached, on a delivery route for my summer job. I was pretty heartbroken, especially after I retraced my entire day's steps to unsuccessfully try to find it.

That knife might have instilled some yearning in me because I still love SAKs. I have a bunch of varieties and almost always carry one, usually a Pioneer, in addition to a main traditional folder. Maybe I would have realized their excellence anyway but it got me off on the right foot.

Bumpity bump bump...I want to read more stories so get in here!

Oh and let’s change the time line to 18 months or less

Well I am a new new member liked it so much I bought the basic membership today actually.
As for my first personal blade memory... I grew up in a rural setting on 6 acres. There was a lot of woods behind the house that opened up into a large field. As kid, probably about 8, digging around and looking under everything I came across an old military knife. It was either navy or army I can't remember the writing. It was black and the blade was rusty and jagged. I played with it several days hiding it in the woods thinking my parents wouldnt allow me to keep it. I got a couple of saplings and began to chop them up one day. Well my finger slid between that old rusty blade and the stump i was chopping on. I dont remember the excuse i gave for having my finger wrapped but afraid that i would get into trouble have a 6 or 7 inch fixed blade knife i hid the wound from my parents. I still have a faint scar on that left middle finger. As for the knife after the attempt to chop the end of my finger off and the fear of getting into trouble I chucked it as far as I could back into the woods. I have looked for it on several occasions including using a metal detector. Still unable to find it. One day perhaps... one day.

Definite newbie here, but as enthusiastic as can be. Ever since I was introduced to the forum, I've spent considerable time here, learning about all kinds of blades that I never new existed and benefiting so much from the enormous knowledge and experience of forum members. Though currently on a free membership, I know I'd put the Gold to good use. I've no interest in asking about values of knives (a benefit I know comes with the Gold), as a blade's value to me personally is all I'm interested in. Most of my time is spent learning about maintenance and care, particularly with folding and traditionals. In fact, I just got my first lamb- and sheepfoot blades yesterday. My first knife, if I remember right, was my grandfather's Case XX. A little twin-blade barlow. I carried it for many years as a young man. Here's a few pics of three recent acquisitions and an old favorite. This is an extremely generous GAW and I really appreciate the opportunity. P.S. I'd be purchasing at least some kind of membership if I don't win. This community is too fantastic not to support.

Thank you so very much for sharing your story. What an adventure to hunt that old knife! Welcome to the porch!
