***Winner*** KnivesShipFree Memorial Day Giveaway

I want to personal thank all veterans. You all are true heroes. My grandfather in law is the most humble man I know. He is pushing 88 years old and was in the Navy. He is truly the person I look up to and admire. His face would be priceless if he won. Thank you for the chance.

That’s a generous offer, Derrick.

My father served on the USS Blessman, a destroyer escort. Convoy duty in the North Atlantic. Carried UDT teams to clear Jap held harbors in the Pacific. Present at D Day, rescued personnel from ships hit by mines.

His seven brothers all served in the army, navy, or air force.

Dad is in his nineties, but still kicking.

Not an entry, Derrick, but thanks for your generosity.

I want to say thanks to all our vets, here and gone. God Bless America.

My grandfather served in WW1, my father in WW2 and me in the Vietnam War.

Mom's dad was USN from 1915-1922
Dad's dad was US Army 1917-1919
Dad was USN from 1942-1967
I was US Army 1981-2004 and have been a DoD Civilian since 2004.

My brother Mike. He is currently serving his fourth tour and is in Afghanistan now. He has served about 18 years in the US Army. He is a 1st Sargent now and pictured on the left.
For his first tour in Iraq I gave a Benchmade for luck. For his third tour I gave a Kershaw Leek.
I don't know the fella on the right and didn't think he would appreciate my posting a pic of him.

I'd like to enter with the request that should I win it would go to a forum member who was a vet wounded in action. Even though I'm retired Coast Guard, I didn't not see actual combat. I don't know whom that would be but I'm sure we have many here.
Thanks! Joe

Great GAW Derrick. I would like to enter my old friend Hugh Cox; he served two tours in Vietnam, the first with the 82nd ABN and the second tour with 5th SF Group. OH

My friend, Sergeant Kevin Hoffman, USMC.

Kevin is an infantryman, a machine gunner (0331) at that. A Marjah Marine, fought in Afghanistan during the fight to clear Helmand if the Taliban. During a vehicle patrol the truck in which then Lance Corporal Hoffman was standing as the turret gunner was struck by an IED. Kevin was thrown out of the vehicle, not only suffering blast injuries but also breaking almost every bone in his body from the impact when he landed. He was medevaced first to Germany and then back to Walter Reed where he has undergone more than a dozen surgeries to date.

My friend is still there in Bethesda, working on his rehab and undergoing treatment. What for him would have been a life-long career of service turned out to be one war that left it's mark on him, he's getting out sometime this autumn to go to college. He wants to be a history teacher. Due to his long time at Walter Reed he has taken to helping other members of the Wounded Warrior battalion as they have come in from the war, showing them the ropes and setting a positive example. He, who actually broke every large bone in his body is up and walking, hitting the gym, going out shooting back home in Virginia. If he can, so can they. Dispute his injuries he has worked to better himself and secured promotion from LCpl to Sgt. Anyone who knows the USMC knows this is hard even if you're not in hospital.

When I think of America, what makes America great, I think of Sergeant Hoffman. A regular infantryman who will not be defeated. I am proud to call him my friend.

My great Uncle Raymond Borunda, served in the Marine Corps durin Vietnam, never hear anything much about it from him.

I would like to nominate my grandfather Evan Cummings... MP in the Korean War. Hardest working man I've personally ever met. Never had a ton, but he did a ton with what he had. Thanks for the chance...

I have a few ancestors who served in the military in various historic wars. Blackhawk Indian War, Civil War, WWII, and others. One in particular joined the 29th Infantry of Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War at age 13 (perhaps age 18), received support after his service for physical disability, and spent over a decade in a mental hospital.

More relevant I have a friend, Don F, who's retired from military service. No war hero, no stories to tell about charging enemy bunkers or anything like that. Just a regular guy who joined the service and stayed for a career. Heck, I don't even know his rank or title. But I do know he could use a good pocketknife, and if my post is chosen I'll pass the knife along to him. Thanks.

And if Don declines, I'll pass it along to my father-in-law who's also retired from the US military.

This is very nice of you. He's not a veteran yet so if this doesn't qualify I understand, but my little brother Jason is going through air force pararescue training. Ironic that this came up because today after talking to him and sharpening some knives I remembered how he was always borrowing a case trapper of mine and thought that I should send it to him to remember home. Maybe I can send him 2 knives!

As a side note, thank you to all that have and are serving, and those that support our military men and women.

Buddy of mine, Cliff G. USAF SSGT ret.
