This knife has three strikes against it.

Strike one: it's stag.
Strike two: it's a single blade folder.
Strike three: it's larger than I'll carry in my pocket.

I prefer none of the above. I bought it a few years ago because I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville during the 1982 World's Fair. We'd jump the fence at the nuclear engineering building to get onto the World's Fair grounds since most of us couldn't afford the entry.

This knife is available for any regular Traditional forums member. Just post why you want the knife, and I'll select the winner from the rationale that strikes me as compelling.

Again, I simply ask you not trade or sell the knife, but that you just give it away if you choose to later rid yourself of it.

Hen and Rooster, Bertram era, stamped Solingen, Germany.

Nice!

My reasons are

It's stag
It's single blade
And a compliment to a smaller carry folder

add to that a compelling story ;)

The shape looks like it would work well for an every day type knife for most chores that I would need to solve when it involves a knife, without drawing much alarm from the folks at work. The stag looks to have good tactile grip for a sure feel during use, always a plus. On long wintry days here in the northeastern PA hills, whittling takes some of the days stress away, providing much needed relaxation and this looks like a knife that could easily handle a lot of that type of work with ease and panache.

And overall it looks like a very classic knife, one that I would be proud to own and of course if she ever fell out of favour, a new GAW would be made to pass her along to the next fortunate soul.

Thanks again for the chance!

Here we go. Here's why I'd like the knife:

Except for the Ganzo slipjoint that got me started, all my traditionals are GEC. I'd like to branch out to other makers. A Hen and Rooster would be a wonderful addition.

My collection is new and eventually I'd like to add knives edging toward my birth year. 1982 gets me a ways down that road. :)

I'm keen on adding stag handles to my collection. A 13 clerk in stag is winging its way to me now but has not yet arrived. This would be No. 2.

From what I could find, this knife is 3 5/8 closed, so just bigger than a 15 pattern, but smaller than a 74. That's a great size IMHO.

All my current knives have multiple blades except for a very nice 74. Single blade works for me.

I've never been to Tennessee but with luck my daughter will have the chance to attend a music camp there this summer.

Why I fancy it?

It's Barehead and that's a weakness of mine.

Longpull AND Stag, well that settles the matter!

Many thanks for yet another amusing&generous GAW

Regards, Will

I've been meaning to pick up one of these H & R coffins for a while. The fact that it's stag, and has a story to go along with it, makes this one even more appealing. Thanks!

I would love to own this knife because it has 3 things that I dont have in my collection.
#1 Stag
#2 Hen & Rooster
#3 Coffin
Also if for any reason I found myself looking to part with it I have a nephew that would love it as much as myself. Thanks for the opportunity. Trevor:D

I'm in because:

1. It's stag.
2. It's a single blade.
3. My first job was selling pizza at the 1964 Wotld's Fair.

I would love to be considered for your very generous gift because, I'm 64 years old and recently retired, 'I need a hobby', I just got into knife 'hoarding' when I bought myself a Buck 112 custom as a Christmas gift, then a Buck 110, then a Buck 055.... 'I love single blade folders' ! I have owned two H&R folders over the last 20 years.... but lost them both! Oh....I bleed Orange, and "Rocky Top" is my favorite song of all time! Go Vols!!!!

I'm in. Hmmmm. Honestly, I see this as a great carry knife. I have been wanting something in stag for awhile. Haven't owned one in several years. Never owned a coffin pattern knife. Ever. Why aren't there more made in that pattern? Never owned a Hen and Roster. Oh, I need some good luck right now. The washing machine over flowed and flooded half the house Tuesday. Yikes! Thanks for the chance at all of these nice knives you are giving away. It's been fun.

Because the only college gear I have besides Tar Heel stuff is an orange U of T sweat shirt. People think I'm crazy. That's why.

Well to me the best reasons to lust after such a lovely thing are that it's a large, single bladed, folder in stag.

Best of luck to whoever wins it, and thanks for the chance.

Please count me in. I'd want it because:

1) The stag is terrific, I love the popcorn and barehead
2) I don't have anything like it, so it would have an honored place in my accumulation
3) I have a Bertram era stockman and the quality is very high
4) Even though large, with the chamfered ends it looks pocket friendly

Thanks for great GAW knife, I do fancy this knife.
I can write down why but the 13 guys who like it who are above me just wrote everything :)
I'll add something more, it's hard to get.
Mike

Count me in 'cause I've been to the remants of the old fair grounds. Knoxville is a fine Southern city with a beautiful city garden, especially in Spring. Plan to be back some day...

Back when AG Russell used to put out the used knife magazine, it was called the Edge or something similar, they always had that knife (coffin handled pattern) in a few different covers at different prices and I always wanted one. I loved the shape of the handle and the spear point blade. Being a young father every time the catalog came out I would drool over the knives I couldn't afford especially that one. Catalog after catalog would come and go and I'd hope to be able to get one but I watched the prices climb until as a young dad I just knew it would never happen and stopped looking. Except for spotting an occasional one on the forums or on some of the knife auctions I had to settle with the knowledge that it was a missed opportunity and live with that.

About 2 years ago I found a Parker/Frost Spirit of America Coffin Handled folder in brass so I scoffed it up as an impulse and to satisfy the need for the H&R but it never did, it just didn't fill the hole so I polished it up, took some nice pictures and occasionally take it out but because of the scales I don't want to get them all dinged and scratched so like my mother used to say, "It's for showin', not for playin'." so it gets shared at shows and on the forums as pictures and stories but the need for that H&R goes unfulfilled. :(

Now I have a nice collection of knives I carry so I certainly can't tell you I need one to add to a beginning collection or that I have no knives so I want it. All I can tell you is I've wanted one since they were bein' sold through AG's catalog, I'm not a safekeeper but a user, not an abuser as you can tell by my posts in the forum. It's a knife I would love and cherish, not only because I've always wanted one but because it came from a member and possible friend off the Forums. One thing I'll never sell is a gifted or GAW knife as they all mean a lot to me.

You know I'm no casual poster here in Traditional by any stretch of the imagination and I've been a contributing member on BFC since day one. I always give back and pay it forward as anyone knows who has followed me at all. I'm not saying that people like Gary aren't just as deserving or worthy of the knife because they are and I wish everyone entering the best of luck and if someone else is chosen I'll be just as happy for them, just a little sadder for me :( .

On a final note I will carry and use the knife because that's what I do but I will also take care of it and when I'm gone I'll make sure it goes to someone else deserving and who'll take care of it so that a 100 years from now, someone will be posting 3D holographic images on the virtualnet version of BFC v34.5.

Leghog, thank you for the generous giveaway and the beautiful Bertram Hen & Rooster and I'd be honored and proud to carry a piece of knife history, especially since you can't hardly find them on the secondary market. As a last attempt to sway you:

I love Stag

I love Single Blade knives, (I love my Case/Bose single blade Sowbelly)

I like larger 4+ inch folders

Oh yea, I got married in 1982 and had taken my first long road trip with my soon to be wife to to Houston and had stopped in Tennesee on the way down to Texas. :)

Good luck everyone and thanks again for the chance to get a knife I've wanted for years.

Leghog, an incredible run, what you are doing is extremely generous so a MASSIVE thank you on behalf of all our Forum members here my friend.
Not an entry- not because I dont like the knife, it was strange because when I read why you didnt like the knife- I love everything that knife has!

I have learnt a LOT of good thing by being here on the Porch, everyone who has reached out to me has - quite possibly not quite known it - taught me lots of good things on how to be a better person - something I strive to be all the time, and watching you continually gift makes me take a Bow to you.
Well done and Thank you.

H&R, coffin, stag: all new to me. I like to keep expanding my horizons. I'd carry it.

Thanks for another novel and engaging GAW. Please include me.

Again, I simple ask you not trade or sell the knife, but that you just give it away if you choose to later rid yourself of it.

Another very interesting knife! Thanks for this ongoing series of incredibly generous give-aways, leghog!!:thumbup:

I'm entering with the intention to give the knife away this summer if I'm the one chosen.
I have a student who is getting married this summer, and this knife would be a great wedding gift for Rachel & Quincy for a number of reasons:

1) She thinks my interest in knives is amusing at best (and criminally insane at worst); she's more likely to remember getting a knife from me than a toaster from me.
2) Her fiance' was recently accepted at Vanderbilt's law school, so they'll be moving to the Nashville area after their wedding. Knoxville, Nashville, who from Michigan can tell the difference?
3) I think she'd benefit from seeing a use for Bambi's antlers.
4) The Hen and Rooster tangstamp/shield logo is very fitting for a pair of newly-weds.

Best wishes to all the entrants! :D
