As many of you may know, I was fortunate recently to win Charlie's "Flat Beveled Bolsters or, What's in a Name?" contest. My suggestion, 'Flat Top' was the winning name, so its with great pride that I get to present to you, the world's first pocket knife with flat top bolsters which Charlie very generously gifted me for winning the contest.

I was thrilled about winning, but also feeling a bit greedy as I already owned a Cocobolo 22 Magnum and had recently won another GAW by 9blades. With that in mind, I decided to find a new home for my Cocobolo Magnum, which has now been sent to live with another fine poster here on the Traditional forum. And, inspired by Charlie's generosity, I've decided to thank him and pay forward my good fortune by hosting a sequel of sorts, or What's in a Name - Part II.

Here are the rules/details:

  • All regular Traditional forum posters are eligible
  • Just post in this thread and tell me the significance/meaning of your user name (hence the title - what's in a name?)
  • I'll pick a winner next Wednesday (May 28)
  • The winning entry will be chosen via random number generator - not my wife this time ;)

Simple enough?

Okay, I'll kick things off. My user name is Old & In The Way which is how I feel from time to time, but also happens to be the name of one of my favorite Jerry Garcia collaboration bands. If you've never listened to them, do yourself a favor and look them up online.

Seems like I'm forgetting something... oh yeah, the prize. Its a brand new, never carried, never used, Red Linen Micarta GEC Bullnose (pictured below):

Best of luck to all of you. I'm really looking forward to reading your responses. :)

Great contest. Back when I registered with Bladeforums I was coming out of some really dark times. Coming through the rough stretch and into greener pastures I was really very grateful to be alive and grateful for the people who helped me find the way. And so Grateful became my user name.

Jim

Probably pretty obvious, but my name reflects the fact that I am an American, living in the land of igloos and hosers! Above the 49th Parallel.
Not an entry, but a great idea for a GA, so I wanted to play!

Nothing fancy about my user name here. My initials and DOB, sort of. I'd love to be included.

Chris-

been called catfish since I was younger by my dad. when I was little I got pushed into a window on a bus and got a scar, leaving me with these big stitches on the back of my head. when my dad saw it he said I looked at me and shouted "CAATFIISSHHH!" afterwards it stuck as a little name in my house. started using it as a username for MMOs and this site and that's how it stuck. helps for my poor memory and a fun story to tell. id look at the scar for the memory but its in the back my head! only time when its brought up when I buzz my head and someone goes "hey mike! you got nicked on the back, better call your barber!" (which is me). always a fun way to start up a conversation!

My user name is the one I was born with. Not much interesting about that, but it is the one I have. What a cool idea for a GAW. It should be interesting, especially when the guys with unique user names explain.

Chris

I'll enter, please. My username is my name with 999 added, since Trey was already taken. Thanks for the GAW.

Just my initials for my username. My better half has bellowed "peemuww!" at me for just about as long as we have known each other, and it's now how I'm known, be it by family, work colleagues or friends.

Great giveaway - I'm in :)

I'm in. My username is Dynamic Moves, which in climbing is a move where you generate a lot of momentum to carry yourself to the next hold. A short burst of energy.

Thanks for the GAW.

Top idea Stevo. Great to see entries from Campo,Monno,,Fisho,Graytoh and Woody(Chrisso), so far.Oops nearly forgot you Jock(a Scottish person) sorry.
unbeknownst to them they just got uhstrayanised .
The name meako is the strayan or strine(Australian) version of the English(pommy) surname Meakin.
You will be issued with such a name upon arrival at your first barby whether you like it or not.
The best way to deal with this is NOT to try explaining the correct pronunciation but to proclaim loudly "Christ I'm thirsty! Here stick these in the esky" whilst proffering at least a sixpack of top shelf beer to the host. Preferably a case or slab of beer Or bottle of red.
You then swagger over to the barby (BBQ) and say "need a hand with that?" The host will then respond thusly "nah mate she's right".
WARNING Do not under any circumstances enter the kitchen during these proceedings except for the express purpose of looking for a bottle opener, beer glass or pinching food.
Do not engage the wives in conversation beyond "yeah no worries ,darl (darling)".
Here are some more examples or strayanised names:
milko-milkman
garbo-garbage man
posty-post/mail man
firey-firefighter
seppo- an American -septic tank - yank-seppo
pommy-pom an English person-P.O.M -Prisoner Of his Majesty(from the olden days)
abo- an Indigenous Australian
cane toad-a person from Queensland
cockroach-a person from NSW
houso - a resident of a government housing project
derro- derelict -a tramp or hobo(which has been adopted in common usage)
most other titles eg politicians and such fall into the category of "unpronouncable on this forum due to insulting and derisive nature"
and so on.

My user name is derived from the latin name for one of my favorite trees - pinus lambertiana (sugar pine).

My first name is Jake & my middle name is Ulysses hence the jkulysses which I've used as an internet name from as far back as AOL instant messenger days in the 90's. :). Great giveaway & thank you for the chance!

Not an entry.

My user name is my first name backward, followed by an abbreviation of my current profession. My degree is in chemistry, but I've worked as a materials engineer for over 20 years.

When I was in college, I had a radio show. My full name does not exactly fall trippingly off the tongue. Being a bit nervous as a new DJ I had trouble saying it without garbling it. So I said it backwards, which I found easier because the consonants were better positioned.

I can't hold my water and I own a men's clothing store by the same name in Tucson, AZ.

Excellent and very interesting responses already. :) Frank - I feel like a dolt now for not recognizing your name spelled backward within your user name. Meako - thanks for the entertaining and educational post. If I'm ever invited to a barby, I'll be prepared, and from the sound of it, likely quite intoxicated. :D Pima Pants - I hope the fact that I laughed at your explanation doesn't make me evil. ;) Thanks again everyone, and keep the entries coming. There's quite a few out there that I'm dying to hear about.

When signing up to play Diablo 2 online, the internet "handle" I was using was already taken. I happened to be snacking on a particular brand of cashews at the time. I changed the "s" to a "z" because that's what the cool kids did at the time.

Not an entry; I got the exact same knife last week.

I can't hold my water and I own a men's clothing store by the same name in Tucson, AZ.

Is it on Pima Rd? Maybe I'll stop by some time for a chat.

hey thanks for the GAW. Alright my username is actually french but more importantly its the name of one of my favorite movies by Jean Luc Godard. English title is "Contempt." Now I know thats not the warmest name but I wasnt thinking about tat when I signed up. I actually wrote to BF and asked about changing my name to Lemmy Caution, which is my favorite pulp detective, also featured in Godard's film Alphaville. Anywho I never heard back. So there you go. Thanks for the opportunity. great idea.

My user name is simply my full name. I found this forum few years ago while trying to find info on older slip Joint, so I had to register to the forums so I wrote down what came in mind first and i was so anxious to read the info that I even didn't pay attention to capital letter on my first name.

Mike

Neat idea for a giveaway.

Mine doesn't have a direct English equivalent but is Norwegian for an individual who is so ugly the tide won't come in if they're standing on the shore. Happy to report that I must not be that busted up as I spend a night or two at the beach a week.

Thanks for the opportunity, and look forward to the stories!

Some of these are really funny! It'd be interesting to see what different kind of people use their own names, initials, birthdate etc. on a forum versus those who assume an alias and a new online identity. Mine is just a German surname, for what it's worth. Thanks for the chance.
