Thank you for the terrific GAW. Prize arrived today and in surprising condition. A well kept tool that I will enjoy.

I received the Douk Douk today. Never had one and never knew it existed until I joined this forum. What an interesting knife.....still trying to figure out what the engraving is on the handle.
Looks like a person wearing some kind of native costume.
Thanks again Ryan for the give away.
I'm inspired and now must decide which knife to choose for my give away. :)

Well that figure is the Douk Douk. The company started producing these knives in 1927. They wanted to make knives hat would appeal to customers in French Polynesia. Being quite ignorant of the local beliefs they picked a tribal figure from an encyclopedia entry on the general region. It turns out the douk douk were a marauding tribe that would come out of the forest and terrorize the village folk. Well needless to say the village folk didn't want anything to do with the knife. But unperturbed the company sought other markets in the French colonies. Besides the douk douk, there is also the tiki, which features a black coated blade and chrome handle, the Baraka which was marketed to the Algerians and has a Berber Star engraved in the handle (note: the Algerians wound up using the baraka to fight off the French colonizers), and finally for the French foreign legion they made they made the Squirrel, which has a great spear blade and is all silver. I'll try to get pics up of all of them soon.
