Here are some pictures from the winter camping trip this past weekend (Feb. 16-18, 2008) in Chateaugay, NY. We had a total blast and practiced a lot of winter survival skills. Keep checking back for more pictures.

very cool looking trip. awesome pics too. looks like you guys camped in comfort there too.

i see in the first chopping pic two men working together on the one tree? very nice. always wanted to try that myself, but i haven't found someone that i trust enough to do it with yet, in terms of abilities.

Great pictures!!!! Nice to see you passing the knowledge on to the next generation.

Here are some blatant pictures of my new favorite axe, an Iltis Oxhead Felling Axe. AWESOME!

A full review is coming shortly!!!

Downtownknifekid,

We went from single digit temps on Saturday (negative temps on the drive up) to 49 degrees today. I had a great cozy night's sleep in a snow shelter I made the first night but had to switch to my bivy for the second rainy night. A snow shelter is great unless you're wet and uncomfortable.

Hopefully I'll get out again in the next couple weeks before the snow all melts.

nice selection of sharps; axes and knives.

also, nice pic of the fire there, the closeup one.

Kevin and Marty -

Looks like it was a blast! Really wish I coulda made it this year! What were the highlights?

Dry Beech leaves still on the tree. Great for ferro rod striking and extending coals for friction fires

what kind of rounds are those...umm...they look like they would hit like a sledghammer.

Brian,

I was upset to hear you couldn't make it.

There were many highlights. The food was top notch and included kielbasa and sauerkraut with rye bread, shepards pie, chilli made by a Chilean, steak burgers with peppers and onions, breakfeast muffins made with ham, onion, bacon, cheese and eggs and so much more.

The weather was great and we had an endless supply of good firewood. There was plenty of knife and axe work. There is no way I would have traded any other chopper for an axe in that weather. A big blade would have a hard time cutting through the plum that we fell.

We took a great hike to the Chateaugay River where we found the remnants of the A-frame I made during the Advanced Survival Course the Summer before. There was amazing conversation each night around the fire and it was so much fun to watch the 2 young guys and 2 young girls learn about the woods.

It is hard to describe these trips in words. They really are so much fun even when it rains and the weather is less than cooperative. We all learn so much from one another and we get plenty of opportunities to practice skills and try new ones.

Jerry had those rounds in his .38/.357. They are Buffalo Bore Hard Cast .38's. They are guaranteed to penetrate up to 12" or 15" with little deforming. Jerry packs those because he takes into account winter clothing/gear.

I've fired his .38/.357 Taurus before and it barks for a snubbie. Even though it is ported that revolver is a handful with full-house loads. These are a great alternative and designed for use in short barrels.

A picture that doesn't help the "Brokeback Mountain" ribbing at all.

Kevin,

Unfortunately, this flu had gotten the best of me - a little relapse over the weekend confirmed for me that it was best to stay home and finish recuperating. Today is the first day I feel my full energy again. This particular bug seemed to be hitting everyone else the same way. If the trip was this coming weekend, I'd be set! I'll see you guys at the PEACE gahtering though. If you're going up that way meantime and want a carpool mate, let me know.

Brian,

I can't make it to PEACE this year because of a buddy's wedding I'm a groomsman in. Hopefully, we'll make it to Hawk Mountain, PA again some weekend in March for a quick overnighter. Maybe we can meet up then. Too bad about the flu. Hope you get plenty of vitamin C and rest buddy.

Kev
