WINTER HIKING/KNIFE TESTING TRIP IN CENTRAL TEXAS?

I'd like to set up a Winter Camping trip somewhere near Austin ,TX-

Looking for a place we could go to test knives and practice survival skills.

If you know of a place or would like to come with us--contact me at

Bill,

This sounds like a great idea. If we could find someone with some acreage in the Hill Country, that would be perfect. Will be in Iraq from the middle of December until the end of January, so I may miss this trip. Would like to "test" my F1 that I'm putting together with a green micarta handle.

A personal favorite of mine has always been Lost Maples State Park. My troop used to go on "prep-treks" there to practice backpacking for our Philmont trips. There are a lot of nice trails and back when I was there you could see six feet down in the water and fish in the fresh water. Real nice place, very green and lucious, not just the damn mesquite that I have down here near Lake Corpus Christi. Great place to go, a little off from your plans, but close to Garner State Park, maybe an hour difference. One of those places where you could hike down a trail and hide out while you mess with your knife testing without sheeple wondering around. I believe when I was there I made a couple of bows and arrows for me and my scout buddies (we were all about 14 at the time) and that was before I even knew or cared about knife brands and blade types. Back then a Scout knife or a SAK was the "best knife in the world." Kind of funny looking back now. Hope this helps, J.

Pednales Falls SP comes to mind in central Texas although I have not camped there. The river adds to the overall experience. Lost Maples is a good suggestion.

I too have heard of Pednales Falls, but I've never been there either, I do like Lost Maples a lot.

I've been to Perdernales back when I was in Boy Scouts. I don't remember too much about it, but I do remember it being a nice place. I believe it is one of the few rivers where Guadalupe Bass live. I just learned how to fly fish this past year so I think I am going to go on a fly fishing trip there in the spring.

Colorado Bend SP outside of Lampasas is nice as well.

Bill! I'm back from Iraq and would be more than interested. I'm planning on taking my son out to Colorado Bend in December for some hiking.

Depending on the location/time, I'm in, and my son would be more than happy to come along.

I have a few new knives that are begging for some work.

Shoot me an email/PM,

Well, one of my Christmas presents to my wife is the CCW class on 8 December here in Killeen. I'll look, but the 15th is probably my best bet in December...more to follow, but my wife has the final vote.

Bill,

Will be back in Iraq then, but will catch you all on the next one. ROCK6: Welcome home!

I like Hill Country State Natural Area near Bandera. Another place that has very easy, but nice hiking trials is Enchanted Rock outside of Fredricksburg. Climbing the rock is fun too. Both places have primitive camping areas.

Enchanted rock is a very cool place with a lot of history. Sounds like they have the place and date picked out. Assuming its a during the week trip and not a weekend since the 16th is a Sunday?

We were planning on spending the night ther(the 15TH)--
you could come for the day

Have not heard back from Rock 6

I will e-mail him

It sounds like a lot of fun but its probably a half day drive for me so one day would be a bit much as I have to work Monday. Possibly another time. The info online makes it look very appealing. Hope you have lots of participation and fun....Great idea BTW.

Well, it doesn't look like an over-nighter for me and my son, but we're planning on coming. Right now it's the 15th for the day. If Sunday is a better day for some, I could do that as well. Once we get the date locked in, we'll have to pick a link-up time.
