Just did a little overnighter "car camping" style. In other words, I didn't backpack in. It got into the 30's here so I decided it was time to get some practice in. Unfortunetely, the battery in my camera died so I only got these pics. I brought along a SAK tinker, Spyderco Endura, KaBar Kukri, Leatherman Wave(old style), and Ontario Marine Raider. I've had the Kukri for a while and it performed very well at batoning as always. The Marine Raider is an ebay grab and I was somewhat dissapointed in the first trial. During the first log, the handle got loose and now wiggles a little bit. It went through the log well but I think I might just take it apart and rehandle it. Even though I make knives, I still like to get factory knives from time to time just for the heck of it. One of these days I'll make a camp knife for myself. Anyway, here are the few pics that I got before the camera died.

Here is the hollow I had to dig out in order to put up my tent.

a horrible tent for winter camping...but it is all I have for now....it actually gets bigger(wider) but I left it this way for ease of use as well as to keep my body heat inside

Man, that looks like a good time. Thanks for sharing the pics.

looks like a nice night out, bummer about the knife. at least you know you can put a nice new handle on it!

Looks like a good night out. What did you use for your sleeping mat and bag?

Looks like a good trip. I keep showing these winter pics to my girlfriend hoping I can talk her into trying one. Thanks for sharing.

I'm curious about whay your tent isn't so great for winter camping.

It looks big enough to deal with the extra gear you need in colder temps. It looks good for car camping as Coleman tents aren't all that light compared with some of the higher priced tents out there.

Are you looking for something with a larger fly and vestibules? Something else?

My wife loves camping but to winter camp in ND, she would need a hell of a long cord for her electric blanket.;)

What I meant about the tent is that when put together properly, it vents too much air out. For example, if I would've set up the canopy completely, it has a pole which holds the canopy part out. There is a screen that is then exposed to the elements. I left the support plole out but it only helped a little since the canopy flap just whipped around in the wind. I could've probably secured it better but just the same, I don't think it was intended for winter use at all. As far as space, it is great. I can almost stand up straight in it and I'm 6'1". I made it work, and since it was all I had I made do but a decent 3 season type would probably work better. Basically, this camp out was a test of the gear I have. I have been lacking in my camping practice the last few years so I'm trying to get an idea of what/where I need to upgrade. The tent is at the top of the list.

I see now.

Yeah, there are lots of good tents out right now. Hit a good camping store, set a few up, climb in and see how it fits.
