Winter Goals

What skills do you want to learn or perfect? The long cold winter is a perfect time to study and practice in my oppinion. If you can get out and do it in freezing temps, you can do it in just about any situation. So what is it you want to do, what is your goal or goals this winter.

My goal is to go out and make a complete fire from a bow drill coal. All the material I will have to find in the field, no bringing prepared wood or tinder. With the exception of cordage;) I always have paracord on me.

Having the right balance of clothing to where I can stay warm in any condition and dry but not sweat my 8ss off.

Learning easy prep high calorie and fatty foods for necessary fuel. I love the winter.

I want to really be able to nail it with my hand drill, even in the cold. At least it will keep my hands warm.

Creating a shelter with a 3 inch fixed blade and maybe a SAK with a saw that you can comfortable spend the night in at well below freezing temps is one I try to do at least once every winter.

My goals are just to get out more. I'm sure once I'm out I'll work on skills (what else is there to do?), but I really want to get on some trips this winter.

Hoping to improve my snowshoeing (got a pair over the summer, no more borrowing off people) and I would like to try a tarp shelter with a body length fire this winter at some point as well.

Also not a totally related goal, but I would like to get my concealed carry permit this year (making it one of my resolutions).

I'd also like to do a trip where I stay in a quinzee, been several years since I built one last, and I think it would be fun.

I want to try and work on my identification of plants in the winter phase. I also want to do some work with various types of shelters.

I want to work on Lungcutter's wine stash.

I'd just like to find an area around me up here that no one owns so I can get in some woods time! :o

As mentioned above, I want to figure out the right layers of clothing and the right sleep system to keep warm at different temps. As always, I need to practice my fire making skills with different types of natural tinder. I also really want to build a quincee if we get enough snow here.

Joe and Tony, Just come to my winter trip and I will have some wine for you. the dates are the 28th of Jan thru the 31st.

Oh wait, someone is getting married and someone has an anniversary.

Just sayin' if you show up I will have wine.

TM,

If you're going out for an overnight, or multi-day stay, please bring it, just don't use it if you're successful.

We don't need any "Hatchet Jack" photos on here :)

My only goal for winter is to get the darn thing over with. I guess that 60+ Dakota winters have more than worn out their welcome. Last winter could have done it single handedly.

I really just am going to work on identifying various plants in the winter. That and possibly some shelter building in the snow :)

im hoping to get flint and steel down....and start on bowdrill(i hvent even tried it yet). also build proper shelters. id also like to make a decent spoon and kuksa

Main goal is to get out more. Then I want to build a decent debris shelter and do a night or two in it. I also want to try out a festive Bannock recipe and lastly use my new wood carving knife to make a chess set.
