Winter Goals

lol!

right, lets just raid his wine stash!

Joe and Tony, Just come to my winter trip and I will have some wine for you. the dates are the 28th of Jan thru the 31st.

Oh wait, someone is getting married and someone has an anniversary.

Just sayin' if you show up I will have wine.

where/when?

No winter camping this year, but I have been experimenting with layering and what keeps me warm in certain temps.

i want to make a decent shelter that will keep me alive in freezing temperatures , and make a fire in the snow

I want to spend the night in a snow shelter/cave and continue to handle & refurbishing old axe heads (just finished my first, lots of fun)

I want to perfect convex knife sharpening, fire making and build/experiment with some more coffee can and alcohol stoves. Oh, and learn to tie some good knots.

I want to try and work on my identification of plants in the winter phase. I also want to do some work with various types of shelters.

I really just am going to work on identifying various plants in the winter. That and possibly some shelter building in the snow :)

Hey guys,

I have 3 ID books for identifying plants in winter:

A Guide to Wildflowers in Winter, Carol Levine, Yale University, 1995, ISBN#
0-300-06560-4

Wildflowers & Winter Weeds, Lauren Brown, W.W. Norton & Co., 1997, ISBN# 0-393-31678-5

Winter Weed Finder, Dorcas S. Miller, Nature Study Guild, ISBN# 0-912550-17-1

Hope that helps,

Doc

Ordered Doc! Thanks!!!!

Actually, this winter, the main thing I want to work on is reacclimatization. I have just moved up here, and it already snowed once. Getting used to the cold coming faster and much harder has been a neat learning curve for me. Not just with snow, but learning how to drive dirt backroads in a Subaru has been EXTREMELY fun, however I want to learn how to predict when I need to be even more alert. I've been watching the dogs, they like to move right before or during a rain. Learning how to chop wood, not just split and cuss but really watching concentric rings and making it so I just leave one piece on the chopping block. I want to be able to fish better during the cold months too.

My only goal for winter is to get the darn thing over with. I guess that 60+ Dakota winters have more than worn out their welcome. Last winter could have done it single handedly.

what about those golf-ball sized hail stones last SUMMER, brother?

South Dakota doesn't just require insulation, it requires a helmet....

Yeah, I can deal with Tonym's first one. There is a try in my 'place' that is now ready. Its a downed cottonwood that fell sometime in the late summer. I've been harvesting wood and letting it dry and testing it. Last time, I just brought a piece back home and did a coal with it right off the bat.

So next time I do my walk I'm going to bring just a piece of paracord and get my fire going. That is still sort of cheating, because I already know where the tree is and that it is ready. However, that is a milestone. Next will be to just find a tree and go at it.

Starting this weekend I have to begin working on my cardio a bit. Even if its just using the stationary bike. I'm noticing that my lung capacity is blown. I need to get back into a little bit of shape.

Goals? Bowdrill mastery, some wood carving, and finishing some projects up.

I just scored me an ancient piece of Osage from the bottom of my wifes grandpas firewood pile, wanna make a nice warclub out of it....
