Need to get a new hat for the winter months. I have one of these...but it isnt practical to wear to work or out...people get a little strange when they see it.

Yes it is warm and it covers the ears but it mats the hair down something awful...not that one of these doesnt regular hats doesnt but this one is a heavier and does mess the hair up far worse. And it get HOT! So I need something a little more practical. I do want something that covers the ears and would be nice if it could stop the wind from rip thru to your ears and head. So here are a few I found that might fit the bill:

MH Nakaya Dome

I know winter is almost over but I like to buy when its the end of the season...deals as well as a month of use. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

I have the MH Dome Perignon. I wear it with a thin MH hat under for a base layer. The hat is very warm. The only thing I do not like about it is it seems to muffle sond alot. To hear good I have to flip the ear flaps up. Not sure if it is because of the Windstopper or not.

I got mine cheap and am happy i have it.

I like a brim or at least a peak so none of those work for me. In winter I tend to live in a Lowe Alpine Mountain Gore-Tex hat. It's totally wind and waterproof and has enough insulation for pretty much everything, but not too much. There are loads of “me too” ones that owe to that design now. I'd sooner pick one of those. http://www.tgomagazine.co.uk/gear/clothing/hats/

I have one of Mt.Hardwear's older hats, and it' the warmest hat I own. BUT... I prefer something with a bill or brim. I have a Columbia fleece-lined GoreTex shell ballcap-style hat with fold-down earflaps that is wonderful.

But most often, I reach for the cheap, dependable, military surplus 100% wool "jeep cap." I love 'em.

Stay warm,

I've "researched" this topic a lot. I ended up with a 100% wool (Made in U.S.) military watch cap for sub-$10. It's the warmest winter hat I've had so far. It has performed even better after I, purposely, washed and dried it with a regular load. It has now shrank to where it wears like a skull cap. The fibers married together closer after doing that as absolutely no wind penetrates.

Filson has similar wool caps as well as one made of bison down if you're looking for brand name. You'll be able to find winter stuff on-sale now that spring is on its way.

This passed holiday season I received as a gift a hand-woven skull cap from a friend. This one's 80% Acrylic and 20% Wool so that I could wash it normally. She's made the hobby into a small side-business as she takes care of her new born. She weaves all sorts of different things and of different fabrics. This hat is just as warm as my other watch cap.

I just wear a sock hat and alternate with a ball cap depending on temp. Of course, I like to hear what is going on around me.... no ear flaps for me unless I was where it's really cold.

Kromers are great hats. And the Filson wool hats are solid as well. And both are made in the USA.

I like skull cap type beanies. Wool with micro fleece lining. Many companies make em. Turtle fur, FUR, OR, etc..
You look very Russian in that hat btw

A mate who came to Lapland with us last year brought his. He'd had it a couple of years and it was the first time he'd tried to use it. He didn't get round to it much and it was a lump to pack. I'm after an excuse to buy one of these now.

Shrinking a 100% watch cap makes for an excellent winter hat

I had a lovely hand knitted one, that I shrunk by accident
The best thing that happened to it!

I still wear a 1980 olympic logo stocking cap . Thirty three years old now. My wife hates it.

I find that brimmed hats catch the winter wind and freeze my forehead. So no brims and it must cover my ears. Nothing fancy to it, a dime a dozen tube touqe works.
