Bought me a new camera today (canon sd780) so I decided to go for a winter hike and takes some pics. Took a nasty little spill too. The snow is about 1.5 feet to 2 feet in some place so the rocks get covered pretty well. Brusied my elbow some. But anyway, here's some pic's I took of a fatwood stump that's about 100 yards from my place. Just about every stump here is fatwood so it's real easy to find.

Nice pics. I'd get an axe and a coffee can , and start collecting a lot of that stuff. Reap the harvest , seeing as you have access to lots

Yea..when I first learned (through this forum) what fatwood was I took some root offshoots of a huge stump and cut up about 70lbs of it. Then I realized it was everywhere and stopped cutting it up.

Great pictures, that new camera is nice. I have a cannon A590IS because it takes good pics without hurting my wallet, but man that sd780 takes some sweet pics. I'm going to have to look into one of those.

Nice having all the fatwood you want at your finger tips isn't it? We have a lot here but nowhere near every stump, what part of the country are you in?

Here are some pics of some fatwood that I harvested a couple weeks ago.

I love my Husqvarna hatchet.

Fatwood is one of my favorite tinder sources.

Camera is working great! Time to sell a knife and invest in a pair of snow shoes. At least that is what I am going to do, before I take a nasty spill...

Thanks for sharing bro.

Ill pay you guys to shove a bunch of it in a flat rate box and send it my way.. Anyone interested? I grew up in GA and it was everywhere, here in WA, not so much..

Nice looking Husqvarna. I came thisclose to picking one up.

How was the fit and finish out of the box?

I'm in New Mexico in a Ponderosa Pine tree forest. There's been logging here in the past so there are stumps everywhere that are years old.

Yea.. if you want some I can stuff a flat rate box full of it. Just send me a pm.

I thought about that as I was laying on my back.

Hey bodydamage...if you decide you want some just let me know. Here's some pic's I took today.

This container and box is what I already have cut up:

I filled those two containers by cutting a couple root offshoots from this stump. It's probably 80% fatwood all the way to the axe.

Here's another stump next to it that I haven't really touched. It's probably 90% fatwood:

anyway...just some more photo's.

The Hyusqvarna Axes and hatchets are made by Wetterling. I think they have a bit better finish than my wetterlings. The geometry is a touch thinner also. it is more like my GB. I love the husqie. For around $40 it's hard to beat a hand forged hatchet with a RC value of 58-59. It holds an edge really well, and has had no chipping issues. They know how to make a great hatchet in Sweden. :D

Where are you guys picking these up from and how do you maintain (handles, edges, etc) them? Id assume a bit of linseed oil and a mill file yeah?
