Winter in the Adirondacks

Well I haven't been around too much over the winter. Truth is I have been busy.
I finally nailed a job that I will start next week.

But I thought I would take the time to throw up some pictures of winter in the north country,

Or "Frick n Nippy" the Sequel,

As you may remember we have had snow on the ground since before Thanksgiving. But right before Christmas, we got some much needed ice,

The power went out,

So the heat quit,

And the lights went out,

It was terrible,

But we finally managed to get the portable space heater going,

Thank goodness for the thermal curtains or we would have froze to death,

After many hours, the lights came back on. And we were able to get the heat restarted,

Things started warming up a bit.

And things slowly started returning to normal,

For Christmas we had a few cold ones,

And enjoyed the lights,

We had another ice storm after that, but it wasn't as bad. It just made the driveway a tad slick for a while,

Other than that it was a relatively mild winter. We never got below -30 and we only hit -27 three times.
Most of the time it hovered around a balmy -15.

But it did snow a little bit,

I had to rake the roof several times,

After a while, it started piling up, Looking up the road,

And more just kept coming,

After a while, just keeping the mail box dug out was a daily chore,

In January, I thought about trying my hand at "The Outdoor Cooking Challenge" After all I have that really nice outdoor grill that Tradewater helped me build last summer,

Well, maybe not today,

Part 2,

Another storm convinces me it is time to get the snow off the wood shed, again,

Soon, as I climb the snow bank for one last look at my outdoor grill, I abandon any hope of the "Outdoor Cooking Contest" Seriously Derek, we need to talk!

The four wheeler does a good job, but as you can see we only really get a few inches here,

Just keeping things dug out has kept me busy,

I have ramps built everywhere to push the snow up and over,

If you could see it the grill is off to the left,

It is actually above freezing today. But we are supposed to get another 16"-20" tomorrow into Thursday.

I'm ready for spring,

Even the critters have threatened to head south,

This stopped you from grilling? Send me your man card. Looks like a nice grill set up though.....:D

Wow  Great pics, I would have died by now.. we have months of above 100 degree days, I could not imagine months of below zero..

Those ramps need jumped good sir. They need it desperately.

It wasn't all pain and suffering,

I got out on the shoes a fair amount,

Here is an earlier trip, after the second ice storm. The snow at this point was roughly 24" deep and I had a tough time even poking a stick through the crusts, the critters are having a tough time of it.

Some rodent tracks,

Some critters had a good time,

Other critters, not so much,

That is wild.

Thanks for sharing that. Kinda makes me feel like a sissy for complaining about the winter we had.

:D

For those of you who might be curious,

This is what -27 looks like from the inside looking out, through insulated double pane glass,

Yikes........that good sir is freaking terrifying......... Glad you made it through with sense of humor intact....... I fear mine would have been frostbit and fallen off in a drift never to be seen again......... Spring does come eventually......

All Best.....

Ethan

I ate in a restaurant in Fairbanks, Alaska one time that had the same kind of ice on the inside of the windows, it did not seem to bother the locals. Nice photos and story. John

Nice pictures, I just love the Adirondacks. Been hunting there for a long time. Real cold winters and real big bucks - when you can find them!!

Thanks for the great pics. Spent a few winters in the North Country (Potsdam) and even after growing up in the very snowy winters of Rochester, NY was pretty surprised at what phenomena occur when it gets into the -20's and below....beer freezes quite fast, for one. And if you breathe and blink at the same time, your eyelashes will flash freeze together from the moisture in your breath. I'm surprised you were even able to take pictures. Don't want to get your hands out of your gloves for more than a few seconds.....

Thanks for the travelogue. Makes me homesick. The Adirondacks are so similar to the Gatineau Hills just across the river from Ottawa. Absolutely beautiful country, and snow or no snow, my friend, you live in Paradise, imo.

Its been the best winter we have had in over 20 years, conditions have been excellent for outdoor activities and the trails couldn't get better. Though spring is bearing down on us there is still going to be time to get out and go icefishing, and snowmobile tripping.

couple years ago did mt. marcy over night in jan. good stuff big snow and below zero... now you got me pine'n for a winter camping trip! thanks for the pics looks like good stuff besides the miserable cold and no power... :) stay warm we are geting hit here pretty good as I type.
