Winter is... TOO DANG LONG!

Sheesh, you know winter is too long when staying warm is a recurring thought. No heat in my shop save for two stand-alone electric radiators, and a kerosene heater. This gets it to about 60F - barely enough for this old boy. I'm so darn cheap that I don't want to put any more money into a heating system because we'll be selling the house this year. Meanwhile I f-f-f-freeze!

Nah, I got a nice Carhart insulated coveralls I wear anyway. Nice and toasty - but bulky.

*sigh* :(

I hope spring gets here soon.

How are all you guys staying warm? Oh yeah, and you lucky dogs living in the South need not reply! :D :D :D

Ive been doing a lot of forging lately and that is it if I can help it. Its cold down here too.

I had a 12X12 shop built because my old 11X21 couldn't get warm enough. I would be grinding and seeing snow blow through the walls. Even with 2 oil heaters going full blast, it probably wasn't 60 degrees in there. Dave Larsen was here before the new addition, and I am sure he felt in great peril just entering the shack. Heh heh heh, a burglar trap in there if they pulled anything away from the walls, huh? I think also all the dirt and dust held up the walls, too."No,Dave! Don't sneeze"!

LOL no kidding, Dan. -9 here this morning and that's not even as cold as where you are! But you know what? I think we are used to the cold more than them Southern folks. Seems like the cold really gets to them faster. Frankly, if there was a way I could move down there and still generate a decent income, I would. The northern coast of NC would be a decent place to move to I bet.

Oh yeah... forgot to tell you guys this...

It was so cold here this morning, I heat-treated and cryo-tempered my blade at the same time.

:p

If that's so Thom I feel sorry for Mark hahahaha not..:D
I spent My Navy years there
that's tee shirt weather in VA.:footinmou :)
the coldest place round there would be around
a disgruntled southern Bell  :D

But I did see 6" of snow there that lasted a day or so
in Jan,
that was fun watching them on the roads..or should I say off the roads..:p I don't believe they have snow plows.
now WV gets a little colder, My oldest boy went to
Wesleyan College in Buckhannon WV for a year. he loved it there
weather wise I should say..
:)

I got out to the (unheated) shop for a little while yesterday. Built a fire in an old barbecue just outside the shop so I could warm my hands every few minutes.

My grinding was pretty unproductive, since I had to place the blades in the snow to cool it off (since my dip bucket was frozen). Then I'd have to warm my hands over the fire again.

Then my beer went and froze on me. That was the last straw. Back inside I went...

Global warming my ass.

i have a little 30,000 BTU heater.... runs off propane and electric to run the squirrel cage blower on it..... that'll get the ol barn up to 80 really fast. but thats if the doors are closed(window for ventilation) really nice little heaters if you cna find one

Jeff,
I know exactly what you mean. I also wear insulated overalls and wool socks but it's my hands that get cold! I have a variable 30,000-50,000 btu propane heater with blower and it does help cosiderably to warm the shop up. I also put up 1-1/2in thick foam insulation to make the ceiling lower and a smaller space to heat. A $10 tank of propane usually last a couple of weeks. I just don't like the fumes and the whining noise that the heater makes. The other drawback to heating and cooling the shop is that everything frosts and sweats when warming up. I pray for spring soon!

This cold just creeps up my back and makes me grumpy. I'l dag-goll-dippy-doo be sure this crap aint gonna happen again next year. GRAAARRRRR!!!

More snow predicted tomorrow. Means I'll have to put the dang plow back on. What a pita! Arghh, sorry for grumbling, guys... so who's going to Atlanta in June?

Got my fingers crossed that the worst part of our winter has passed. Back to grey and wet here for the most part. Still wearing my thermal coveralls with sweats on underneath. Did buy me lectric socks just before the bad stuff hit. They only heat the toes but for 10 bucks a foot and one D battery I guess you can't ask for more.

Dan,

I dont care what you say, It's frigging cold:eek: Its warmer on Mars than it is here. I'm just spoiled now. I spent two years in school at Great Lakes. Got real used to the cold. But that was 20 years ago. I dont mind a dry cold but this wet slush dank cold just seems to settle in my feet. Oh and Yep im still rotting away in virginia.:(

Hey, Mark, I live about 4 miles from the base. Winter here has been mild the last ten years, it seems. However, we're finally getting a nice taste of the white stuff, it's been snowing lightly for several days now. Yesterday that "freeze-yer-cookies-out-on-the-drill-field" Hawk was blowing in off the Lake at a nice clip of about 25mph. (I'm sure you remember that, one of the highlights of winter recruit training.) We took the 4x4 out down to the state park and did donuts in the empty parking lots! Nice kid-fun for a 52 year-old! :D The ice pack on the water was really neat.

I have always loved winter, but the bones don't like it near as much anymore..... golden years my arse! :D
