Winter is... TOO DANG LONG!

Dan, you ever get to see any of the waterspouts out on the Lake? Those are cool. Saw 6 at once out there one day fishing.

I hate to tell you this Mark but I grew up in the mountains in Va.....It doesn't get cold here in the flatlands.
It is a great source of amusement to watch drivers here skid around all day. Virginia doesn't get snow, it gets fluffy white ice.

When I was a ski instructor I would get a good laugh at the folks from Vermont and other such snowy places. They would hit the slopes, find the ice and hit the ground. You don't ski Virginia ice, you survive it. The trick is to look good while being out of control!:D

Nope Mike
I see the lake flying in and once flying out.
that's as close as I go to it..:) they didn't let us off base much
but when they did I can't remember much of it :D

peter,,, who are you really  :) :)

You ever go to a pool hall/bowling alley called Bertrand's???? It's where every cabby in the area took the boys "looking for a good time".

Most of you's never got past the honky-tonks like "Mary Stack's" on the strip outside the gate. :D

Hope it wasn't too excrutiating here, Dan. Ridiculously, sailors were second class citizens in this area usually. Stoopid provincialism. People rarely appreciate the military appropriately.

I spent several years in Maine as a kid and it get cold longer there than anywhere else I've been. However it gets colder in the Rockies. I worked in Wyoming in the oil field in 1978 and it got -55°F with a wind near Lusk in December. That same winter in February 1979, while working at night on a drilling rig about 50 miles south of Vernal Utah it was -45°F in a fog with a light breeze. These two incidents were the coldest I have been.

These days, the 0 to single digit lows here seem cold to me. Anybody remember the Ballad of Sam McGee by Robert W. Service? If you don't, look it up.

mike we went Main side most of the time
and once to Milwaukee I don't remember much of that one
other than
I remember drinking a lot and my nose
up close to something purty flashy on stage :D

shgeo we still get short of 3 months of warmer weather.
I remember winters when we got winters,,
I've seen it -42,, before the wind
chill was added in. with the wind the other day they
figured -50 or better in places.
one of the places around
Rangeley got 41" of snow about a month ago we got 18"
this was in one storm..a taste of what use to be.:D

I just remember what the thermometer says, if it is 33°F, no amount of wind can freeze water. Wind chill is supposed to be what it feels like to exposed flesh-If it's below zero and I am spending time outside, there is going to be dang little exposed flesh.

Thanks, Dan. You didn't miss anything here in Waukegan and North Chicago, that's for certain....

Coldest I've ever seen it here was the winter of 1981-1982. One of the longest cold spells ever in this area. Had one day -80F with the windchill. Think it was about -22F w/o the wind. That was pretty chilly. Spent most the day outside. I really liked brutal weather then.

My best cold-weather story is about Nanc..... -20F when we went up to mid-Wisconsin to pick up hay. No one warned her about the seat in the outhouse. When she said "my butt burns" the next morning, it was funnier than heck to see the perfect frostbite burn exactly the form of a toilet seat..... poor Nanc. hehe, still laff about that one. :)

okay now I'm really mad. I spent 20 minutes attaching my "minute-mount" plow last night. We were expecting around 9" last night and today. When I woke up this morning, I spent too much time watching the television to see where the snow went and didn't have enough time to take the doggone plow off before I went to work! Well I guess its a blessing in disguise. Cold air and no snow make for thick ice. Guess I'll go fishing this weekend. :D

I spent most of my w/e's at the "Pub and Grub" . Had many a good time and many a good fight in that place. I really like the "Safe House in Milwaukee also. I had 5 or 6 girlfriends at the time while I was up there. My Southern drawl just melted the britches off them yankee girls. Ahh to be 21 again:D

Peter nap - us Vermonters can handle ice just fine - it's those spoiled powder-sluts from the Rockies that you're thinking of. :)

Anyway, it's much warmer today. Heck, I'm wearing short sleeves!

Man that frosts my butt :footinmou
:D :D just look out for the frying pan yea ..:)

Its been between -15 to 10 for the last two weeks here. I just dragged my anvil off the deck and into the basement. I think I may move my grinder there too for the winter. Its in my mud room/shop with no heat and a leaky roof. Problem is, when I start to get it a little warm out there with a heater, the ice starts melting and it rains in my shop.......Looking forward to spring and a new roof!

You poor bastids. It was so cold here today that I could see my breath. I only left the doors and windows open for about 3 hours this after noon and I had to wear my coat till 11:00 this morning.
Gee and you think you've got it rough.
:D :D ;)

You might be right Wulf. That was a long time ago and now that I think about it, I'm not sure I ever saw any Vermonters ski. That was before you could buy Coors in Va and I remember the resident Vermonters spent most of their time making runs up to the powder slut states in their Mercedes and bringing back Coors for their bootleg ski parties...:D :D :D Thems was the days!!!!:D ;)

Yup you boys in Maine are sure having your share of winter.
Growing up in Minnesota we never thought it was cold till it got down to -20 or so.
They never had this wind chill stuff in those days but we figured out at an early age if it was -40 and the wind was blowing.
GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WIND.
Sure like this WA weather. We had 3-4 days below zero but right now it's 50 with no wind. Is 50 without any wind still 50??.
Take Care
TJ
