Winter Jackets?

Hi
It doesnt get cold enough in south Ga. to need a jacket. Might start to need one in December or January. Carhart make a great product.
Any of you guys interested in winning a Leatherman Wave? Last month Igave away a Case Mini Trapper to Frank from Steamboat. If you are interested please go to OkefenokeeKnives.com Thanks and good luck

I wear a waxed cotton shell over severalm layers of wool. usualy I layer silk or merino base layer, woolpower400 gm top, heavy or medium weight wool sweater. I may substitute a wool shirt for the woolpower. and or leave off the sweater depending on conditions.

If it goes waaaay low like below -10 or so. Then I'll throw a down vest into the mix.

I run so hot that I seldom need more than two layers even when it's down to zero.

Buffalo Special 6 shirt for me.....

I wear a vintage air force snorkel parka. Heavy, but super toasty even in sub-zero temperatures with nasty winds. It's from back in the days when they still used timber wolf fur for the cowl.

Here's a picture from a few years back with my little sister modeling it on a cold winter hike on the park roads:

For me it's definitely just a shell of some sort with layering under. I haven't owned a heavy jacket in maybe 20 years.

living in the Ca. coastal redwoods , it doesn't got too hot, in comparison to some of the spots you folks live in...:o

i have a Columbia "Monarch Pass" wool jacket that i wear a lot... it is super warm and has plenty of pockets and a nice hood.. i also have a Moonstone 600 fill down jacket that has seen one winter too many...:D

thats a real nice nice wool jacket!

Walkabout beat me to it. I, too, have a Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser. It's like wearing a really warm and really heavy wool blanket. It's great for really low ambient temperatures, but the wind cuts through it easily. When it's very cold AND very windy, it's not overly comfortable. So, like Walkabout says, pairing it with a windbreaker underneath makes it bombproof. It's made in the USA, too!

Got the same jacket during the sportsmans warehouse closing sales here, Great jacket. I also have 3 or 4 M65 field jackets with and without the liners.

And I also found an interesting version of the field jacket that is long like a trench coat(It goes to my below my knees and I'm 6'4 so you know it's long), never seen another like it anywhere I've looked, it was a steal cus it was an odd size and the only one the store ever had I'm guessing, got it for less than 40 bucks with liner, thats my holy #&$@ it's cold jacket along with an N3B Parka with Coyote fur trim on the hood.

This winter I'm going to sport the canvas shell from my czech army parka. It has a faux fur collar that cinches up tight and a hood. The canvas is wind proof, breaths extremely well and I can sit around a fire with out worrying about sparks.

For insulation it'll be all about the layers, button or zip up fleece and wool shirts. I've found this to give the best control of your temperature, each layer can be opened up partially, fully or removed, and being able to unzip down to your base layer is the tops, you can cool off quickly without having to take anything off.

While not technically a jacket im a huge fan of under armors performance hoodies warmth without weight. im of a very cold resistant stock and even mid winter i will walk around most places with just a hoodie on. they dry fast and as i mentioned earleir are light weight i put thumholes in mine:

I have 4 under amror hoodies and i consider them to be basically my favorite peices of clothing i own. i have 2 black 1 grey that i use in urban areas and one green with a blaze orange hood for use in the woods.

i also use my black military issued polartec fleece jacket

and when it gets dire cold i have a black leather biker style jacket with gortex brand thinsulate its oversized enough that i can layer underneath it and still have room for concealed carry. it has many pockets one the perfect size for a zippo.

I wear a Cabela's MicroDown Parka up here in Canada. It's great for -40 degrees Celsius :D

I just found my moms issued medium-short bdu cold weather parka. Fits me just fine, and it's unisex, so no thin waist type deals. So I guess I have two jackets now, either of them will work. Does anybody know if the BDU parkas used goretex?

The AF snorkel parka brings back lots of memories.
Spent a bunch of time in those, and if you batton it down completely (hood up & fully zipped) it's good for some truly sub-zero temps. The snorkel warms up incoming frigid air enough to avoid freezing the nose hairs (and other facial parts).
I see one every now & then in some of the catalogs I get & I'm still tempted to buy one 33 years after turning in the last one I wore.

I have a couple Carhartts, but mostly wear my old M65 field jacket. When I was in an area that got truly cold, I'd throw on my M51 parka over the M65.

I've got 5 of 'em. The Sierra (c/w built-hood), The Detroit Dearborn with corduroy collar ( my usual daily wear one, Black nylon windbreaker for lighter weather, one each brown and tan jean-jacket types. The Dearborn is great for layering like you said , and I love it in the winter. Really great pockets for knives and stuff also !!

Thanks! She's a real trooper. Got her a yellow mini griptilian for her 9th birthday 3 years ago. :D

I just got my jacket for this winter. A carhartt sierra jacket with sherpa lining. I like it alot. It's warm, but allows alot of room for layering without being to bulky. I like the feeling of the fabric too, doesn't feel like it'll rip on me. Like I can conquer the elements in it. It doesn't too bad either.

I wanted to know what kind of jacket you planning on wearing this winter to keep out the cold, and what you look for in a jacket. Anyone else wear carhartt?

Kakadu! I got my Drover's jacket last week, oilskin canvas with a dynamite liner. Comfy as all getout and different than every other person walking around downtown or hitting the trails. I have a few Arcteryx and North Face jackets as well but this Drover's Jacket is what I'll be using most this winter. Depends on your sports as well, if you do downhill skiing, cross country skiing, ice fishing, hunting, work outside, whatever, you will need and look for different things. Whatever jacket you buy I highly suggest North Face's new wool baselayer, I dropped the 150 bucks on mine this week and it's like wearing armageddon proof sex over 90% of your body.
