Winter on the Moors

Great pics. I love a snowy winter.

The last city I lived in (Spokane in Eastern Washington state) broke snow records two years in a row. 93.6 inches in the city actual snow totals, not just drifts. The year before was 91 inches or something similar.

The best two winters ever!!!!!!!! So much white wonderland. Thank goodness for a truck with 4x4 low, and great off road tires!

Pardon a yank, but what exactly is a "moor"? Simply open grassland?

Moorland is a large tract of untilled land which is peaty and covered usually with heather and bracken ..... the soil is too acidic for grass up on the tops but you can grow grass on the lower parts of the valleys .... here is a pic that shows the heather up on the tops ....

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures. They make me think of two things...Sherlock Holmes and a pub that serves Guinness.

Beautifull pictures. Would love to see more of the architecture of your home

Awesome pictures Peter looks like pretty wide open spaces over there. I've hunted snowshoe hares in north dakota before they get pretty big as far as rabbits go.

Moors? Heather? Bracken? Speak English, man. JK Nice pics, Peter. I lived in East Anglia for two years and never saw snow like that.

that may be the coolest house i've seen. Did you build those rock walls yourself? Any info on the history of that property?

The walls are centuries old as is the house .... it was built as a toll house for the Snake Pass when the Duke of Devonshire privately funded the construction of the road across the Pennines in the late 1700's - early 1800's .... it was built as a drovers road to bring to market the hill sheep and to transport quarried Gritstone used for grinding wheels in the Mill Industry .... the house has a large window blocked up with a cross on it .... remnants of the late window tax where windows which were surplus were often covered over .... it took until the 1840's for Income Tax to come in so hence the covered window .... later when the Devonshire's bequeathed the road to the public the house was privately sold and has since been extended ....

Peter, wonderful photographs,I now live in the US (North Georgia) but grew up near Leeds.I love it here but I spent many wonderful days buggering about in the hills with my Dad when I was a little boy.I rarely feel homesick but your photos have done the trick! Thanks,Jonathan.

Stunning pics. I've been wanting to take a trip across the pond one day... what gorgeous scenery. Enjoy the snow and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
