Winter Training Thoughts and Pics

RIck,

Not only is the one of th ebest threads I;ve seen in a while... it is one of the best I have ever Read.. Great stuff... You're a truly skilled woodsman, and your abilty is complimented by having the opportunity to be mentored by such a great instructor.....Thanks for sharing....

Most impressive.
I wish I could do such things; unfortunately, I'd just die due my malignant hyperthermia.:(
Summer survival I could do; in winter, I'm a slave to technology.

Sounds like one uncomfortable night! Heh, I bet it was a hell of a learning experience though! - 26 is no joke. :D

You should get Bow to drop by the forum sometime, I remember him (and you) hanging out at the old Les Stroud/Survivorman forum years ago.

Great thread. I always learn from your posts, thank you for sharing.

Excellent post, mate. Really great. Congratulations on a job well done and thanks for sharing all those wicked pictures.

Hey Rick,

Great post! Wish I was your age (and physical condition :( ) because I would love to be able to join you.

A note to others, here - if you think you would like to do this one day, stop procrastinating. One day comes and goes all too soon. Trust me, I know of which I speak, and I'll bet there are some others on this sub-forum that will agree.

Maybe not the same vintage, but I'm aged enough to agree. Health and time have a nasty, sneaky way about them.

I'm probably partially aged, and still working with a young mindset... but from what I've recently been through, I whole-heartedly agree. Do things now, don't attempt to wait until "things are right" or "the right time". Place a higher respect & honor for the present, it's called that for a reason, because it is a gift.

Mag,

That's awesome. I don't believe I'd be up to that challenge currently. I am doing my research, no mentor found yet (I know the saying "When the student is ready..."), I'm learning & looking forward to putting it in action. Thank you for posting. Now to keep my eyes & ears open for those kind of learning opportunities.

Very nice post. Did you use a single tarp for the tipi? What size tarp(s) was it? Some really good, solid information here, thanks for putting it up.

Uber excellent thread Rick. Can you outline what part of you kit you did have with you on the surprise shelter build and overnighter? Thanks!

I've been waiting for this thread. It was worth it.

Very impassive, looks like you had great time.

Thanks for sharing.

I always look forward to your threads, they really help to make this place what it is.

I bet seeing your kids is especially sweet after a trip like that!

Well done!

This is what I had on me at the time... (and what I actually used)

and the knife I used... (edge untouched and still shaving sharp!... 1070 at its best)

In my pockets, I had about 20ft of paracord, a small FAK, headlamp, trailbread, bandana and a lighter. Bow asked me to only use my Knife, Flint&Steel Kit and the tinfoil for water... so I stuck to the plan, even though that headlamp would have come in handy. The night wasn't so much about SURVIVAL as it was RESOURCE MANAGEMENT and MAKING DO, WITHOUT.

Foil is so good. Mears said on one of his shows that he hated it in the woods and since then I've seen it maligned on forums several times. It's an ingredient I always pack.

Great thread. Nice to see the safety glasses in the bush as well. I'm surprised it's not something more people wear while out there. And where abouts did you go into the bush? Close to home or somewhere else? Thanks?
