Winter truck gear

Winter items in my truck (most stored in the tool box in bed of my truck)
A few things I only carry in the winter:
2.5 gallons water

I'm a little curious, how do you keep the water from freezing?

i live in a city so i'm normally driving a 5 or 10 miles at most, so i don't have anything in the car usually. I'm thinking i should probably change that.

Same thing with me, city driving mostly. Two years ago on my way home from work, a literal 8 minute drive became over three hours stuck in traffic due to a storm.

From that I realized I needed two things in my car from then on:

1. A full bottle of water to drink.

2. An empty bottle to piss in.

I keep it the water inside the cab under the back seat, so it's not terribly cold in in there. I also live in the central valley and usually it only gets down to around 30-32 degrees. If I'm up in the sierras then I make sure I take it inside with me at night.

Makes sense. I keep forgetting that not everyone lives in Michigan. :o Last night I left my car outside and woke up to a tank of frozen windshield washer fluid. The bad thing is that's the -30* orange stuff. :D

Hmm tomato paste lantern...sounds like a project:thumbup:

Did you poke a bunch of holes in one and add a wire handle?

Exactly right. I have some emergency candles that are about the diamater of a tomato paste can and fit in there very nicely. Any stubby candle will do really. Just drop it in and light it for a bit to let it melt itself in place.

A friend of mine got caught in a snow storm one night. The interstate was completly closed down. Even though he was in a four wheel drive and could still go, people all around him were stranded and blocking him in.

He could see his exit but couldn't get to it. He was stuck in his vehicle for about 5 hours.

Hearing about his experience motivated me to put together my cold weather bag.

Many people wear light jackets thinking they will be in a warm vehicle and just run in and out.

I can imagine how many people were stranded that same 5 hours with and empty tank of gas and no warm clothes.

Adaman was right on. Some supplemental heat is a great idea.

yeeesh. yeah, this thread is definitely making me reconsider my choices.

Is a "hi-lift" what we called a handy man jack when I was a kid? Absolutely worth it. Had one for too long to mention -- you'd figure out how old I am...

I think maybe the city is worse in such a storm; one car stalls and blocks a road at rush hour, and everyone is screwed. Two cars stall...5 cars stall, sun goes down, accidents happen, tow trucks can't get in...things get very very congested. There were children taking shits in the wastebaskets of their schoolbuses at 9pm.

This has probably been covered here in detail before but this week's big storm made me think: What do you keep in your vehicle for those times when you can't get where you want to go (stuck in the snow, etc.)?

chains, a jack, a warm blanket, a cell phone and a shovel. Had to use em all this last week, northern Idaho got bombed. And dropped to -20 degrees when we got stuck in the mountains in packed snow that is 5 feet deep...

Jeff is joking! I repeat, Jeff is joking! No need to email him asking if he WAS joking. Just covering your ass Jeff, you know how these things usually end up! :D

Thanks for saving me on this. I forgot that I was not going to make any more jokes and I also forgot we have a lot of idiots that lurk around here....on the other hand maybe I was serious. :D Cleaning out the gene pool

i should probably improve mine a bit. my auto survival kit is two machetes in the trunk. anybody ever use those blue mover's blankets? i ran with allied van lines for a while, and slept under one for several nights in blizzard conditions. they're pretty dang warm. i should get one for my trunk...
