Hi, and Happy New Year,

Just returned from a few days of snowshoeing in western Manitoba... beautiful scenery. Temp was about -18 degrees C (approx zero degrees F). Here are some photos:

I believe these are high bush cranberries

Here's a beaver lodge:

There was a lot of hoar frost on the branches:

This was a "rainbow" effect from ice crystals:

The trail ahead; the tracks were game (possible moose and/or deer)... there weren't any other recent snowshoe tracks on the trail:

The trail behind (that's my wife, way off in the distance... I had headed off to take the beaver lodge photo):

Here's me harvesting some true tinder fungus (chagas; Inonotus obliquus). I'm always on the search for this... I love the smell of it burning... like incense. I carry a small pry-bar with me with I use to remove it, using a baton. I actually chipped the pry-bar... everything was frozen, including the fungus and the metal bar. I'm glad I didn't use my Woodlore!.

Here's a portion of the harvest:

Hope you enjoy the pics!

great pictures man. Manitoba is some beautiful country. did you do any ice fishing while there?

Thanks :)

We didn't do any ice fishing... the days were pretty packed with snowshoe hikes and cross-country skiing. Ice fishing is pretty popular here, for sure :)

Excellent pics. Especially the last one of the sunset which makes me think of how unforgivingly cold it can get at night.

Nice photo's and great score with that tinder fungus. I'm hoping to replenish my supply next time I go up to McGregor point off Lake Huron. I miss visiting Riding mountain from my grad school days in Winnipeg. Loved the sound of the elk at night.

Really really cool photos (no pun intended). Looks mighty cold up there but very beautiful shots. Thanks

awesome pics! i went for a hike today and most parts still had knee deep snow. i checked out some snow shoes and holy moly, $200+! i think i'll wait for the sun to melt more of the snow before hiking again.
