Hey Guys...

I had a great time this outing. Not the most "bushcrafty" weekend but we got to try a couple things and enjoy a bit of the outdoors. The Super Shelter was a learning experience. I can see with some tweeking and practice, this shelter can be a terrific addition to your winter survival arsenal. As a one person shelter, you could quite literally have a smoke free heated shelter in your pocket. Scott and I went big, not knowing much about this set up and by day 2 we had it working pretty efficiently.

I was glad that Ken and Eric decided to join us. At times, I was a bit envious of their high-tech sleeping system. There are so many variables with the low-tech approach.... sometimes I wanna just stop, drop and shop.

Here are some of my pics from the trip...

Clearing the shelter/fire area.

The frame. As always, we went too big.

Enter Ken...

... and his stuff.

Ken went straight to work gathering wood for the fire. This dead oak was really dense and burned wonderfully.

There is always room for improvement. We had to stick with or original design. In hindsight, a tight, more simple frame would have been qicker and probably more efficient...

One of the hazards of gathering phragmites... a nasty little leaf cut. That is why I always try to remember to wear my saftey glasses. One eye poke could change your plans... or your future depending on the severity.

Enter Eric... the Ice Pirate...

Hanging out with the guys...

Nice get-together! I love these kind of threads. It looks like a good time was had by all.

Super nice job on that shelter guys. I have no doubt it performed well for ya.

Rick, Is that the Bush Tanto? I like that knife very much.

Great pics and story Ken. I really need to get out for some winter camping.

Rick - 'Anybody got a kitchen sink?'
Ken - 'Well I got a laundry tub sink, a bathroom sink and a kitchen sink....Which brand are you most interested in?'

I think Rick and Scott win on the light pack load. My right hand is still sore from cutting all that wood (I thought my special training method would have prepared me better).....

Thanks for posting those shots Rick!

Looks like a great, educational trip.
Thanks for the tip about the leaf cut. So many of us, me especially, forget things like this. I have been blessed with nearly perfect eyesight and would hate for one simple mistake to ruin an eye.

I've been looking for a Snuggie in this pattern, where did you find it?

Jason.... my cousin (Scott/Canoeguy) makes them out of Italian wool army blankets. These things are sweet. Having made my own and tested them... I am very critical. Scott's are extremely well made and built to last..... no shortcuts.

Rick

Awesome pics and write up...man, that looks like just what the doctor ordered! Some winter woods time.
I am waiting for hunting season to get over down here...then its on like donkey kong.

Great stuff, gonna have to try that shelter !!!!!

Rick looks like my long lost brother, we even have matching grey parts in our beards !!!!!

Great post guys. Anything you would do different with the shelter, even after your mod, next time out?

Like the pictures of friends hoofing in later. Something about being off the beaten track and having a friend or friends hike in.

Good times!

Hey Rick,
How big was the plastic tarp and what mil thickness did you use? Any issues with the size or thickness of that material? One last question why did you cover the entire stucture w/ the plastic tarp? I guess another way to ask that question is could you just cover the front and sides w/ the plastic tarp and use the heat sheet on the roof? I'm thinking about packing a smaller size tarp.

Awesome Pics Guys... I've been wanting to try one of those sheters for a while.. Love the use of phragmities too.

fantastic pictures, and a great and informative post! Thanks kg!
