Recipe for a terrific weekend:
Ingredients:
Warm clothing; snowshoes; survival gear; A Few Good Knives; warm beverages or the ability to create said beverages; cigar; Mans Best Friend; cold weather and fresh snow.
I spent this weekend on and around Blue Mountain, reveling in the prime snowshoeing conditions. It was cold (but not too cold), and it snowed constantly. Saturday was spent on a few separate 2-3 hour hikes, plus an awesome outing from midnight - 2 am to enjoy the spectacular full moon. Sunday afternoon was spent on one huge off-trail hike that covered sections of the Bruce Trail, parts of Loree Forest, and the back 40 of various farms between Thornbury and Blue Mountain. By the time I returned, it was dusk, and a snowstorm had reduced the visibility to about 10 ft. Which was awesome.
For this weekends hiking, I carried my JK Hudson Bay belt knife (a great chopper that excels at removing dead and fallen branches from my path) and its new companion, a Koyote PSK knife, carried lashed to the HBs sheath. Both came in handy - the HB for trail clearing and kindling chopping (for trail coffee), and the PSK for cigar cutting (!) and some impromptu snowshoe strap repair and jury-rigging. These knives make a great pair. Combined with the Koster forum knife in my PSK, I was doing a decent job of representing our local makers on the trails!
But enough text for now. Time for pics.
Thanks for looking!
View of the moon during a midnight snowshoe:
Someone needs to start making snowshoes for dogs. Ruby does her best, but the fresh snowfall made things a bit difficult for her!
A few shots of the woods:
There were loads of tracks to be found - raccoon, deer, coyote, turkey, and a preposterous number of rabbits.
This would have made a great emergency shelter:
Getting towards the evening:
To be continued ...
