Thanks wizzer. Yes it does have a tailstock and I made a tap holder for it too. :( This was just me being careless. I will try 303 next time though if I can get it.

Metal supermarket has 303 in round bar. You would have to forge it into bars. I looked into it a couple months ago. We have limited supply of 400 series stainless here. Knifemaker.ca has 416, but it's pricey. I just bought a couple more bars of 416 this week. I should bite the bullit and order a few hundred dollars of 416 from the state's and be done with it.

Yes, a bunch of 416 is a good idea and probably something I'll buy in the near future too.

Today's progress

First a pic of my jig for quickly adjusting cutter height on the lathe. Disclaimer: No machinist was hurt in the making of this post. ;)

A little more grinding and started beveling the wooden par of the handle. Remember, I have to little modifications here and there to see of it works or not and adjust from there.

Since I am not making a broom handle there will have to be some flats on the handle st started that too.

Before another round of grinding, used the surface grinder to cut a little distal taper. One thing I learned a while back, shim the chuck, not the work.

Need to do the guard next...oh joy. :(

This is as far as I got but I am getting tired and since the final fitting is crucial, better to call it quits for today.

And a final pic with a little rounding done on the bronze parts and more shaping of the blackwood.
Starting to take shape don't you think?

Thanks for watching and your support.

When I tap on a lathe I always well allmost always just a drill chuck in the tail stock and turn the chuck by hand. Keep the tail stock loose on the bed. Only time this ever gave me a problem was tapping 6AL-3V Titanimum.

Good idea JT, I have a homemade tailstock tap holder like this:

Time to try and get that handle a more pleasing shape. Gotta be real careful with files on the lathe.

More later...

Shaping of the handle done. Finish is almost done too but I need to move on to engraving before the final touch up.

I think she will like it.

Thanks for watching...

handle came out great ! i was looking at the earlier photos wondering how you were going to "turn" it into something nice to hold on to :)

Oh I can't wait to see what you have planned for the engraving!!!!

Thanks for the good words guys.

Engraving is going good, especially with the new Airgraver, love it.

Just to make sure my friend doesn't see it before I give it to her this week-end, I'll wait to post pics at the beginning of next week.
