Project knife, the steel will be w1, from some 5/8 round I have, overall length 9.75", blade approximately 4.75", handle choices are kingwood, african blackwood, maybe cocobolo or tulipwood, I haven't decided yet, for the tang the plan is to turn the round to .250, thread it and then screw it into the piece of wood and epoxy it, bolsters will be octagon in shape, and the hamon will be fairly splotchy and random. The octagons will be larger than the top down view suggests and I don't expect it to see much use so the tip isn't very strong. It will be a flat grind with a fairly large 'micro bevel' edge and distal taper.

Any suggestions? What's a good material for a black liner? I need to borrow someone's small wheel too :)

round two, i dropped the point a little and made the neck part a touch wider. not sure if I like this better though. I'm gonna put a black paper spacer between the bolster and handle.

I like it, especialy the smooth transition to the edge, no sharp corners to hang up on stuff.

Luke, I liked your first draft better. It has much more flair for lack of a better word. I liked the smaller ricasso and the little upsweep in the blade point.

I like two better. You can always thin it down some if you don't like the shape....but you can't fatten up number one.

I like em both as well, but i liked #1 a tad better as well. I pictured the ricasso kinda kept more oval to keep it beefy enough, and I like the upswept tip as well. I'm sure it will turn out great however you do it though. If your anything like me you will have a great drawing, then change your mind along the way anyhow. It seems like it speaks to you a little more when its 3D and in your hand. Good luck bud.

thanks for the input everyone, I gotta wait until wednesday to get started but then I expect to have more frequent updates.

My buddy and I did some work on the lathe today and made the tang, it took around 3 hours to screw one end of the steel up and then finish the other end. I couldn't get the depth handle markings to translate into actual steel removal so it was all by trial and error.

Gotta sleep now but I'll be back with more information and some pictures tomorrow(thursday).

Ok. I like both. So I would make two of them. :) You can never have two many knives unless you are a knifemaker. Now I have confused myself.

I was thinking about making two, I want to do one with a round bolster and one with the octagon, and the round one with a more carved handle, but I messed up the steel so it might be a while on the second one.

I forged in the transition in a few nights ago but the tang part drooped a little bit when I heated up the bar to set the transition, maintaining a fairly square setup there was important to the design and I set the transition too far forward, at this point I'm going to start over and forge out the blade, then a hidden tang.

I suppose now I need a file guide :(
