WIP: Grinder Build

Holy Smokes!!! I'm building the same thing RIGHT NOW TOO! I glued up and screwed my plywood together Got to order the axle shaft tomarrow. I'm gonna run a 3/4 hp TEFC 1725 rpm but I'm running a 23" contact! Going to use a shop roll abrasive to wrap it with, Gotta cut a small slit a 1" deep and drill a 1/2" hole at the end of the slit, use a peg to keep the roll tight. I'm going to run about 180 - 200RPM (about 1000 SFPM) Should give HUGE hollow grinds also going to set up a jig to keep the blade straight.

Sounds like that will be a cool machine.

How wide will the wheel be; 2"?

If you make the wheel 22" diameter you can use standard 2x72" belts... just cut the belt at the seem and proceed as you were.

Very cool machine, I'm very impressed with your results.

Thanks! Now that the wheels are trued up, it works quite well. I added another layer of the Ultra Black silicone to the large wheel tonight and I think I may do another layer yet which should give me about a 3/16" layer total and I believe I should be happy with that.

It can actually be ground fairly well if you're setup for it. But cutting it? Long strings that get wound around everything and nothing ever ends up flat straight or square. I hate it. I actually hate it. There are three things I actually hate in this world. Funding sackers with entitlement issues, being dictated what to do by the state on frivolous maters, and machining rubber. There... I said it.

we aren't set up with any kind of grinder good for this stuff, i cut some parts to length on the bench grinder though, then did the rest of whatever i could do on the lathe. the viton 80 duro cuts fine but hrbm 80 or whatever is almost not feesable, one time the co. wanted us to make a part with a long 15degx15deg undercut in a 1"bore out of 50 duro! couldn't do it, was not happening at all.
