Hello everyone!

Inspired by some posts in this forum and the Edwood7's great Hawks I decided to make a Knife&Hawk combo..

Both are done in SB1, the knife 4mm thick, the Hawk 7mm, both Fulltang.

Both are getting Handles made from "Hartgewebe", a German variant of Micarta. It ain't pretty but it works.. :D

I'm working with files and sandpaper only at the moment, because I don't have a Grinder. These 7mm are quite a bit. :barf:

Also this is my first try with a grind on both sides of the knife, and of course I messed it up with the knife, its not really symmetrical...

Enough talk, lets see pics!

Messer
Ready for heattreat,
after heattreat it will get a Stonewash and some sharpness... :D

Hawk
After working on the form for AGES I finally got it done today, so I could go over to the grind. First side is done, one to go.
Also: needs handles.

After all this is done, this baby will get some weight reducement holes into the handle to improve the balance and handling.

I hope you like it!
I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this!

Best,
Murphys Law.

edit: sorry for the blurry pics. :foot:

The knife looks great and the "Hartgewebe" compliments it.

7mm is a good thickness for a hawk but you want to reduce the weight on the handle.
You may punch more holes on the handle as a measure of reducing weights.

The axe looks good to go. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I appreciate the comment :)

I will definitely drill some more holes into the tang of the hawk, but that will be the last step, even after making the handle scales. I figured I could get the best balance if I start balancing out after all other weight influencing steps are done.

At the moment, without scales the balance is about halfway between the first and second hole. I'd like to have it up at the first hole, but I'll just experiment and see what works.
Drill, assemble, take a few swings, disassemble, drill some more, reassemble, take a few.... and so on. ;)

If you could slot it all the way from the first hole to the last ...your point of balance will change significantly to where you might have a really well balanced hatchet...

Hello broe,
thanks for your comment!
The existing holes are to fasten the scales to the tang, so they won't be touched. But what happens between these holes is gonna be fun. :D

New Stuff!

Some in hand shots of the Knife ;)

edit: the pics are blurry again... must be damn Photobucket...

I like what you have going, don't have any idea what SB1 is but I suppose you do, so that's what matters. I have been thinking about doing a hawk also but cant find 5160 ( what I'm use to working with) wide enough. I hate how straight your grind lines are, but only because I'm still arguing with mine.

Hey,
thank you! This means alot to me :)

On a related note:

Hawk is DONE.
Gonna send it out for hardening tomorrow.
