WIP - Making one good Boker out of two.

Ken, how is the walk and talk on the knife now?...it looks great

Duncan, it's miserable. I haven't got the knack for piening a two-spring knife yet. As this is only my second re-build, I don't expect perfection. I just can't seem to figure out how to pien the pins so the blades don't wobble, and have smooth action. Still learning. Thanks for the compliment!

Looks great! I think I saw those auctions and was wondering what someone might put together. ( I had been thinking of two one-bladed knives.)

Question for the knife tinkerers- If Kbras used nickel-silver rod mimicking the original pivot pin diameter rather than the finish nails, would the walk and talk improve? How much clearance is there typically between the rod and the pivot hole in a pocket knife?

You know, Ronnie, I was thinking the same thing, but for a different reason. I actually reamed out the pin holes a bit to fit the nails, so the fit, I think, is not the problem. I think, though, that if I could get my hands on some nickel-silver pin stock, which I believe to be softer than steel nails, I would not have to strike it as hard to pien them, so it would not get as tight. I just have to find someplace local, or online, where I can get some nickel-silver pin stock.

If you do that, please let us know, I too am doing a rebuild of a half-camper and would really like to stop buying oversized SS pins

Brets-ftw - I did a quick google search for "nickel silver rod", and found several resources, and they are much more reasonable than I expected. I can't post links here, unless I find something on the approved vendor list, but it was an easy search. Happy hunting!

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement. For an update, I was able to spread out the sides a bit at the pivot end, flush the joint, and put a drop of mineral oil in the joint, and now the action is much smoother. I even get some snap out of the larger blade. This is definately encouraging.

Also, for anyone interested, I do have another project in the works. I will do another WIP if the mods are okay with that. One hint, I got a piece of 1084 carbon steel from the auctiuon site!

The nickel silver pin stock is def. the way to go. It is softer than the nails. You should also have about the length of the diameter of the pin sticking out on each side when you go to peen. You should also use a slackener when peening. I made some out of those feeler gauges you use to gap stuff. When you are done peening, you just pull it out, and it should give you the right amount of slop in the joint. I use a .010, but YMMV.

BTW, Jantz and Knifemaker Supply are just 2 places I know of that carry the pin stock.

That's a great EDC you have there now! Great job!
