WIP - my very FIRST knife project - handle restore - feedback welcome

Looks like it is coming along nicely.

Just a note of caution on blades in vices.
When you walk away from the vice, take the blade out.
A blade in a vice, even taped up, is a dangerous thing.
Bump into that & you've got trouble, cuz neither the blade, the vice or the table are going to move.

I have the Craftsman hobby vice with the suction cup bottom & a piece of granite counter top that I trash picked. Works a treat.
The vice has padded jaws and sits in a ball socket so you can adjust it to all different angles.

Keep up the good work :)

Very sound advice - sounds like you may have learned the hard way

I've been eyeing up that hobby vice with the suction cup and will probably pick one up at some point. I've got pads that fit over my current vice so I'm good there.

Thanks again

Good suggestion, T.

What type of epoxy are you using? Will pretty much any type of epoxy work?

Hm. A lot of folks prfer longer setting epoxies , I usually use 5 minute , a couple times I went higher ( cant recall which one maybe 30.. ).

If you do all your pre fitting/sanding/etc beforehand , IMO 5 minute will work fine.

Some folks say the longer setting the epoxy is the stronger it is. Makes sense I guess.

This little project took a back seat - but I messed with over the last couple of days and put some epoxy in the gaps and it filled in nicely.

Will sand paper work to smooth out the epoxy?

Trim the excess with shears or a sharp blade then sand clean.

Fine grit and leave a bit of a rise on the epoxy?

I'm actually pretty happy with it right now.

Next up - I need to decide how to finish the handle.

You need to file/sand the epoxy down on the edges, leaving epoxy only in the gaps. If you don't, that area will not finish like the rest of the handle.

Thanks, Bill - I'll make sure to get it all cleaned up. I'm really getting excited about this one. I'm hoping it turns out ok because it'll give me a lot of confidence to move on to the rest of the knives in my collection that need some attention.

Looks great, can't wait to see her all pretty'ed up again :D
