WIP of Sheffield inspired 3 thick Sportsman's knife - Ken Erickson

Once again you've outdone yourself Ken..the ivory is definitely the right choice on that knife !!

Wow.... Amazing! Seriously the most impressive work I've seen in a long while, if not ever. Keep it up, Ken!

Great to see it coming together!

Ken,
I am getting tired just lookin' at all the work that has been devoted to this piece, fabulous!
Jeff

Simply stunning! Can't wait to see it 100% complete... oh, and then in use by Ed!

Thanks for the kind words guys and gals!

I am in the middle of hand finishing out the parts to this knife. Here are a few pictures. The amount of time just to finish the leather punch is amazing. The center liners will be coined/milled. Heraldic shield.

I will hold off on good photos of the ivory , as until they are fully finished they still will not show the colors and contrast.

This knife continues to amaze me Ken, absolutely fantastic work sir :)

The thought of all the hand finishing you will have to do on this knife boggles the mind!

I just counted up all the bits and pieces, including pins came up with a total of 28. If I soldered bolsters rather than doing integrals I could add 4 to this number. Most all these parts have surfaces that must be hand finished:D

Wonderful to see the knife coming along Ken. Fantastic workmanship and attention to the smallest detail. The finished knife will be quite something.

When I originally decided to call Ken and discuss his making a knife for me, I had in mind a rather "simple" slipjoint pattern. Things kinda got outta hand.

Seriously, while discussing the possibilities with Ken, I discovered that we both really like the old Sheffield unusual patterns. While I cannot honestly say that I have enough whittlers, trappers, stockmen, etc, I decided that I really wanted a custom version of a Sheffield mutiblade with a couple of implements included. And Ken was really excited about building one, and sometimes you gotta go with the maker's instincts.

Someone upthread posted that this will be the ultimate Swiss Army Knife, and he is right. I usually have a SAK in my pocket in addition to a custom or 2 (I am not a minimalist ). But I have found, at my advanced old crotchety age, that using a handmade knife gives me more satisfaction than using a production knife. And yes, I'm gonna carry and use this. I just don't know how. While I got special permission from the Old Dog hisownself to carry knives in a pocket
purse without losing my man-card, the ivory on this knife denads something special. Maybe a 2-layer leather pouch ( belt or pocket)-- really tough horsehide on the outside, and soft-as- ( this is the traditional forum, and some of those mods will get all cranky at me if I post what I'm thinkin') on the inside. Has to close completely, so as to protect that ivory.

Any of y'all got any ideas?

Edited to add:
It occurrs to me that the above might be misunderstood, and I might be taking too much credit for the concept of this knife. While Ken did consult with me about materials, some of the implements, and some of the blade shapes, the concept and design of this knife was his, including the idea of the original pattern on which it should be based. While it is patterened after a Sheffield knife found in the book "Sheffield Exhibition Knives", it is altered significantly enough by Ken to really count as his own design. While I am not talented enough to really have much significant input on the design, I am smart enough, and have learned enough from makers and the people on these forums, to understand
when a talented maker makes suggestions, and follow his advice. Just let's be clear: the concept of this knife was and is Ken's.

Some of the top gun leather guys will make anything you want and they are used to using elephant, horse, water buffalo etc. for the outer and soft linings. Only limited by your imagination. You have gone this far have them make you a matching belt and wallet as well:D
