WIP questions

I am sure people will appreciate and enjoy what ever you put out, I am also glad you have help, WIPs are a lot of work to do especially if your computor skills are like mine. Still, they are worth every minute of it. Thanks, and really looking forward to it.

Anything you two put up will be appreciated. I find it hard to put into words how and why I do things and rely on the pictures too much. I suspect you will have the same trouble but seem to communicate well. Its time consuming, thankfully you have some help. This should be one of the finest on the web actually. Looking forward to it.

For us who follow nearly every WIP here we can take what we need from each one and all build better knives. I think the wip's are good for the collectors too as they can see most of these knives take some serious time to design and make and are getting a great value for their bucks spent. These WIP seem to be pretty famous by the time they're finished. As a maker I love that part.

Your handle shapes have always intrigued me. I also like the way you trim off excess weight everywhere.

Thanks for all the input fellas! :)

I think it will be fun.... Kind of funny I used to do these all the time but if you don't keep up on it, people forget.

I have a video camera, but have NEVER uploaded video to the interwebz... Maybe Angi and I can figure out how to video the blade testing and get it on here. MAYBE!!! ;) :)

I can do the video thing, but you'll probably have to burn it on cd and mail it to me. Kind of ironic, if you think about it.

I'm looking for to it.

My hat's off to you Nick for taking the time for this. I know it's not that easy to get the shots that are meaningfull, unless you have some help. Lin

I would be interested in seeing how you fit up the guard blade and handle. Also would be interested in seeing the clay coating process. I guess I would pretty much be interested in seeing it all come together from forging to finishing:) -Burton

All the technical stuff you do is really interesting and great, but if you do any of the process nude, be sure and enclose those photos as well.

I posted this on behalf of Stevie and Joey.;):D:D:D

Am I going to be the only one to state it? Unless Angi is included in the WIP photos, it's going to fall flat....

Just sayin. ;)

Hi Nick, Thanks for taking the time to do a WIP thread. Aside from seeing the blade during each step of the process, if you could have your wife take pics of you working during each step would be nice, seeing the equipment you use and the state of the steel and such. The way you coat the blade and heat treat it would be nice to see too. I remember the thread discussing the design of this blade and am looking forward to seeing what you guys settled on and how it turns out. Good luck to both of you and hope everyone is happy with the way it turns out.

Same Here.....

Nick / Lorien - you guys have been here how long and don't know that Friday night is about the DEADEST time to start a new thread? :p

Roger

Roger, please don't sidetrack young Nick by reminding him of what day it is. I mean, the dude has finished 3 or 4 knives in the last couple of weeks. He's on a heck of a roll. Let's not distract him, ok? ;):p:D

Roger

I didn't know that. :o

The vast majority of my threads have been started on Thursday or Friday afternoon/night. Figured that gave folks time over the weekend for viewing.
So what's the best time for them (or anyone) to start the thread?

In my experience, best days to start a thread are Tuesday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday - in that order.

I made the comment because of Lorien's post early in the thread bemoaning the lack of responses, which I attributed to the timing of the opening post versus any lack of general interest in the topic. Considering the amount of responses to what is essentially a thread about a thread, interest is defiitely not lacking. :)

If you start a thread Fri. night (eastern time) you may get a lot of nothing until Sat. afternoon. Weekends are slower than weekdays overall.

These are generalizations, of course. There will be plenty of individual exceptions.

Nick,

I think that Looking at the 50+ page WIP in the book I made on
Tim Hancock, or even the one I photographed for Edmund Davidson's
book while he made an Integral, can really be quite educational.

Not so much (for you) on how knives are made but very much on
how a professional photographer/scientist displays the process using
only available light and Photoshop.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Nick,

If you remember them, I think the old Terry Primos tutorials were highly informative without seeming too instructional. You could do lot worse than to emulate those.

^you wouldn't happen to have links to those, would you? I'd love to check them out:thumbup:
