Wire pocket clips?

The one on my spyderco pikal is actually pretty nice. It might not be the most grippy stay on your pants clip like a cold steel pocket clip. But it gets the job done plus its very low profile. Blends right in with a pair if jeans.

Be very careful. I lost a $1000 custom because the wire clip bent slightly and it fell out of my pocket. It was a big solid 'tactical' knife, but the clip just wasn't enough for it.

I could see how a larger knife might need a better clip, but it seems to work pretty well for things like the Caly 3 and Chaparral

As many times as I have read this statement (especially on this message board), I will still never understand how something "looks cheap".

I'm not very fond of wire clips, but they seem to work fine for small knives (or even bigger ones that aren't heavy, like the Superhawk) and are very low profile. I don't like how they look, the first one I saw made me think that it was something home made.

The only wire clip I have is on my Manix 2 lightweight, but I love it on that knife. Doesn't add much to the weight, keeps it in the pocket with the perfect amount of retention, blends right in with jeans (non-knife folks often mistake it for a pen) and it won't get bent at all by the weight of the knife. Not sure I would want one on a heavy knife and it doesn't exactly suit a "dress" knife, but it suits middle-of-the-road lightweight knives very well.

Aside from a cost saving maneuver, what is the sense behind wire pocket clips? Most I have seen look cheap and un-sturdy.

I dunno. "Cheap" is in the eye of the beholder. If you think they look "cheap", then to you they do. It's a personal preference call and there is no right answer. My own answer is, "I don't think they look cheap."

As far as "unsturdy", like any other clip, it depends on how well it was designed.

I have a couple of Spyderco knives with wire clips and find them to be secure and comfortable. Moreover, because all the surfaces are perfectly rounded, the edges don't catch on things as easily. I like them and tend to prefer them over solid clips.

Spyderco wire clips not only works fine, they look stylish (IMO) and are low profile. All good things in my book.

I dont see, why the Spydie clip should fail, its well made and holds the knife fine in the pocket, but if it did, the knife would merely fall into the pocket.

I have a Spyderco Techno with a wire clip, I think it looks fine but I really don't like it.

I can feel the clip move whenever I squeeze the knife in my hand, feels like the wire is scraping against the Ti. handle, Yuck.

(before I get a "did you check to see if the clip is tightened?" Yes, it most definitely is - its just flimsy)

This caused me to design a solid clip to replace it with, now I just need someone to help me make 'em...

I would probably love wire clips too, but since I cannot stand carrying tip-up I hate them... :o

The way spyderco mounts the wire clip could work fine if it was placed under an oversize pivot bolt, if your into that sort of thing.
It would only require milling two slots...

Why not make them yourself?

I slapped a homemade solid titanium clip on this Spyderco, but that was merely because we could.

Doesnt change that IMO the wire clip works and looks good.

No, you cant send me a PM, but wouldnt matter much anyway. We only made the one. The clip was only made because we could and for the heck of it. It was part of the total tranformation of the Spydie (Nanoycyl handles, titanium clip, blasted blade, new bushing).
